I was thinking of trying a site on alcoholism. Great adsense dollars, some affiliate stuff with digital downloads. Maybe even some books through Amazon. SBI's action guide says the numbers all look good. But the google ranked people are huge. About.com, Wikipedia, May Clinic.

Huge names, yes, but they're not dedicated, niche-specific sites. Your aim should be to accrue as much mindshare as possible to the point where this kind of conversation is commonplace:

A: I only just found out... my cousin has had a problem with alcoholism for ages. I feel awful that I didn't even know. I want to help her, or just say something... but I don't know what to do. I know your dad was an alcoholic... is there a good book I can read or anywhere on the web I can go to read something or ask questions. You know... something for concerned relatives?

B: Yeah, there is a really good website actually, with a good forum and a lot of articles and lists of addresses of clinics and so on. I still use the forum even now. It's: dtdistribution'salcoholismwebsite.com

Can you imagine the conversation above with the friend saying: "Try Wikipedia!" or "Try About.com!"

Not really the same, is it?

I'd say go for it and the very best of luck.

Thanks for taking the time to help me out. I will go forward with this. What's better than helping people and making money.

Try finding some long keyword phrases with less sites listed

Its certainly a unique niche, the best of luck with it.

If the site is a good quality resource try getting it listed on the wikipedia alcholism page. its nofollow link but you'll get decent regular traffic from wikipedia.

I guess the question I would have is are they buyers? I'm just trying to imagine someone saying, "You know what? I'm an alchoholic, I think I'll buy something to not be anymore."
