If you were to creat a blog on your own site would that not take away the advantage of being part of that blog service's search directory and also possibly being included in yahoo, google, msn's search directory.

I thought the point was to create a blog with links to your site that could create traffic for your site if it's on-topic.

If your site is not being indexed, has relatively little traffic won't your new blog be in the same boat.

Please help me figure this out.

Ping your blog posts which gives you the opportunity to get traffic. Put a link on your blog back to your home page or sub pages and vice versa.

This type of internal linking can build you valuable backlinks in the eyes of the search engines which will help get you ranked higher for your primary keywords. This will lead to more traffic. And round and round you go.

Another advantage of having your blog on your site is that you're giving your visitors only one domain name to try to remember instead of two.

Also, if your blog is a sub-domain instead of a sub-directory, this can be useful because when it comes to search engine rankings, Google at the moment is treating sub-domains as though they are different sites. So for certain keywords, you might be able to rank No.1, No.2, No.3 and No.4 in Google.

Also keep in mind that a blog on a host that you don't control can be shut down.

The ping feature makes blog easy to replicate. Also, blogs appear to be favored by SEs because of their ever changing content. Blogs are a great way to get indexed, reach a high trafic status and make money.

I just thought of another reason to have your blog on the same domain. When you write something interesting on your blog and people link to it, those links boost that page's PageRank, and PageRank is also passed on to other pages of your site, helping other pages of your site rank higher.

With a combined effort here, we've come up with lots of good reasons.

im reading this thread and have to say, I have seen websites that are in a blog type format, with a blog and Ive looked at their VIEW CODE and seen the word "PING" although I had no clue what it meant. I feel lost and am unsure where to find this info: my question is- how would one go about creating a website with a blog that completely matches and that is hosted ALL on your domain (or is it subdomain? they seem to have different meaning based on who you ask) and then how would one then have the blog searchable by SE's and the blog directory from wherever the blog was generated from? -anywa-if anyone has some basicinfo or can link me to a grea article-that's be greast! It just seem like everyone just knows this basic stuff but me Smile

The advantage of your own domain is that you have more control. I started a number of blogspot blogs but I finally realised that I was risking their 'virtual real estate' when I read horror stories of accounts being closed by Blogger. All that hard work could be lost overnight.

It isn't real easy to create a blog theme that matches an existing website, although it can be done. I wouldn't waste the time trying or worrying about it. With all the different WordPress themes available it shouldn't be hard to find one that compliments your site. Or you could change the header image to the same as your website.

Getting indexed in the SE with a blog is quicker by pinging the top services, and social bookmarking ect...

If your site is fairly new I would put the blog in a subdirectory with links on it to your main index file and other static pages. This way the SE's see the consistent new content added to that domain.

Then you can always add more blogs in sub domains on related or more tightly focused niches and interlinking all of them.

There are a lot of good reasons above. Here are two that may help you:

1) Easy to update your site without messing up with html or FTP.

2) Excellent to communicate with your subscribers and readers.

I agree with that. A blog for me is my central home where people can visit and see what im all about. And if they resonate with me then they will check out with what I have to offer.

If your website is all static pages having a blog will benefit your site greatly. You'll have your own rss feed and you will be able to alert the search engines of your new content right away with ping.

Another plus is you can get responses from your visitors about the content you just posted, answer questions and create value.

Thanks for this information. I have a blog attached to my site and I did it so that my site would have fresh content every few days since that helps with ranking. I never considered having a seperate blog.

So would it be beneficial to do both? Have a blog on your site and have one outside to drive traffic to your site? That way you get two sources of traffic to your site...?

If you have the time and resource to have another blog outside of your site, go for it.

Just keep the blog relevant to your niche so as to draw more targeted traffic.
