I was doing a little searching, trying to turn up a list of must-see sites for the newbie would-be designer.

I see James Martell gets mentioned a lot, and I see a handful of other sites, and of course Rupert's site is prominently mentioned hereabouts, but I was wondering if there was a thread that compiled other sites we should be looking at.

I also did a search on "affiliate software" and didn't turn up much. (I must be an awesome searcher) What is affiliate software supposed to do? Does it help you track affiliate payouts for a given site?

Thanks for your help,
blake

In most instances I've found, affiliate software usually refers to software that merchants use to manage their affiliate program.

I think Rupert's sites, one was on DJ equipment, and another on computers, are good structured sites, Martell has excellent tips, and of course, the Sitesell/SBi sites you can find at results.sitesell.com offer some great ideas on site structure, content and using various features within your site. All of the above are geared toward content sites.

For mini or micro sites, I would recommend Phil Wiley's site ozmedia.com, his newsletter, and Michael Campbell's sites, newsletters and ebooks.

If you are trying to come up with design ideas, I recommend you also check out the various template sites, as well as resources for html and css.
Review useability standards at Jakob Nielson's site as well, essential before you start designing anything, if you want to offer accessibility plus check out anybrowser.com for cross browser compatibility.

When it comes to design, be it content or minisites ... less is more. Too glitzy(lots of bells and whistles), crowded, heavy graphics, are all things that will slow load time for your visitors and eat up bandwidth. Keep that in mind ... make your visitors happy and you will get that MWR (most wanted response).

Hope this helps,
Debs

Thanks to Debs, it looks like there is now. Wink

I like to look at the sites I bought from (as good examples). I agree with Debs when it comes to bells and whistles, and the sites I buy from tend to avoid these.

It strikes me as a good idea to build sites in a style that works on you, since that would be a good way of combining effectiveness with a style that you are happy with.

You might also like to take a look at some of the less hypey direct marketers, for writing style influences, with a view to persuading your visitors.

That Allan Gardyne bloke, springs to mind.

Jonathon Mizel's Cyberwave Media and Stephen Mahaney's Planet Ocean are excellent persuaders, also. If you want a more "down to earth" style, Terry Dean is an interesting example, too.

Oh... and don't forget Paul Myers.

So have I.

All the best,
Charlie.
