A proper logo for 1&1.com should be a snail in a suit.

One of our clients needed to have his site hosted on US soil, since they are targeting American customers. So I researched a bit and gave them a choice of hosts, 1&1 among them. This ended up being their final choice.
They needed the site up as soon as possible, since within the week they were travelling to the US to get things going. Therefore, we signed up for an account for them with 1&1.

I've worked on web development at several positions for almost 10 years. I have NEVER (not once) seen a hosting account take as long to be activated as the one I signed up for with them.

After you sign up, a sign in big, friendly letters tells you your account will be activated within 24 hours.

After 48 hours the account was not up, so I contacted support, and they basically said "since billing be not of the in the america, it take time week of the days 3 and in 7". (Translation: "since your billing address is not based in the US, please allow 3 to 7 days for the account to be activated"). Yes, their support center is clearly not based in the US. No complains there, but would it be too much to ask that the people they hire speak basic English?.

Anyhow. 7 days passed, and the account was STILL not active, so I contacted support again. They "elevated" my support request to someone that sounded american, and he told me that it would take up to 10 days for the account to be billed and activated.

Today, I would love to tell you how 1&1 servers rate at a technical level.
Unfortunately, i can't, since after 20 days THE ACCOUNT IS STILL NOT ACTIVE!!!.

this sounds pretty shocking, especially for such a well-known hosting company Confused

I tried 1&1 a while back when they had a trial offer. Didn't care for the service, either.

As a straight host, I've found CrystalTech to be very solid.

I use them for domain registrations ($6.99 a year for private registrations), but I prefer Hostgator for web hosting.

I'll never use 1&1 again. Very nice people, but their service is terrible. When you have a problem, they don't seem to know what their doing and, in the end, don't end up helping you at all.

I have numerous accounts (web hosting, domain registrations, etc.) with 1&1. They are superb at the market they advertise for: low cost services. Their network infrastructure (servers, routers, fiber, etc.) are all first class and at Netcraft you can see their performance numbers are world class. When I need hand holding or to be tucked in at night one of my other hosting company recommendations could be a better match but for seasoned IT professionals they are worth every penny.

I also waited 5 days for them to activate and send me a username ID.

When they finally send me, I told them I'm not interested anymore to do business with them.

I am not surprised at all.

The problem with a company as huge as 1&1 is that they have all kinds of customers. With thousands of servers they can't satisfy every single customer and make sure all the servers work fine all time.

Either you like 1&1 or you hate it.

Personally, I prefer smaller company... they are more manageable.

As mentioned in another thread, I use Hostgator and
have always had prompt and efficient service from them.
