Hi,
This is my first post. I'm SO new to this, it's scary. I just built my first website that offers info on free product samples, online shopping deals, and survey company info. I wanted to build a site around my interests. And I'd heard about how you could make $ with google ads, so I jumped on the bandwagon. My website is amatuerish, but I'm learning! I realized that once I owned my own domain, I could also become an affiliate, and possiblly make money too! Yipeee!

SO--- I started signing up with places like walmart.com, yankee candle, sephora...you know... Now, a lot of the places are affiliated with CJ.com or Linkshare...but there are a few out there who seem VERY legit, very well known, and they ask you to fill out their form online, and they want your SSN or tax ID.

I don't know how I feel about this. I've always read you should NEVER give that info out, unless you have called your bank yourself!

How safe is it?

There is one place I want to sign up with--they offer those stupid popups where you can click on a smiley and dress him up, blah blah blah, but I thought it might pull in some money for me. Can I say the name of the site? Is that okay? Maybe you can tell me, if they are safe or not? It's NeverBlueAds.

I don't know much about these W-9 forms. See, I've been disabled all my life, and have never had to fill out income taxes. Now, all these places want my info so they can send me their form. Can anyone advise me a little? Any info, thoughts, suggestions, are all greatly appreciated, as I've said, I'm pretty ignorant about all of this stuff, because I've never done any of it before.

I don't know if we have signatures here or not, but I'm going to put a link in my profile here in case anyone is interested in checking out my website. I could use a little feedback. Thanks for all the help! I've been reading on this forum now for a couple of weeks, and even the newbie questions seem like GREEK to me!!!

~Molly

Hi Molly, Welcome to the forum!

I'd be concerned, too.

I don't live in the U.S. and don't have an SSN number, but as I understand it, U.S. laws require that affiliate vendors provide 1099Misc forms for all annual payouts exceeding $600. Your SSN is required as part of your identification on these forms.

We have a Site Review section for that. You can make a post there and ask for feedback. If you specify exactly what you want feedback on, you're more likely to get replies.

If posts here seem like Greek, you may be able to make sense of some of them with the help of the Knowledge Base, where common questions are asked. There's a link to the Knowledge Base at the top of every page.

Allan, thank you SO much for all of your help and advice!

I'm going to check out that knowledge Base first! I appreciate your reply! Thanks for the tax info (I didn't know how much you could make before you had to report it!) and thanks too for the info on the Site Review part of this board. I didn't know it existed.

So everything you told me was new info, and I am so happy to log on this morning and find your reply!

Allan, I've looked all over, but I can't find the Site Review section of your website. Can you point me to it, please?

I'm reading the Knowledge Base right now---SO much info on your site, it's wonderful!

Are there any links on your site that are more relevant to someone like me, who has a website dedicated to online shopping, with affiliates that are big name companies, like sears.com? Most of the affiliates you guys talk about on this website seem to be more for promoting a single product or service... Anything like that? Thanks!

Welcome to the site. I'm a beginner as well and learning a lot here and other places.

Definitely read all the beginner's advice articles on this site. Then google "SBI Action Guide" and read that. Some of the tools and stuff aren't accessible if you don't own SBI, but there are other ways to find out the information besides using his tools. But the most important thing that I learned from these beginner's guides is that content needs to come first. As of right now stop signing up for affiliate programs. Work on your site - build your content - and once you have 30+ pages of really good content then you can worry more about the affiliate links. I was doing the same thing - everyone always jumps ahead to the money part - but now I'm slowing down and only putting google adsense up right now until I get more pages built.

And for the tax things. I'm more comfortable with Linkshare and Commission Junction than some of the others. That's just my feeling. And for income, playing devil's advocate here - ANY amount of income is supposed to be claimed to the IRS. You just don't get the paperwork (1099 form) unless you make over a certain amount.

Welcome again, and good luck.

30 pages? Gulp! I've only got, let's see... 4. My website primarily deals with 3 sections: get free samples, get coupon codes for online shopping, get signed up with paying survey companies, and my fourth page is my survey company blacklist, of the companies that suck.

All of my content, therefor, are links to sign up for freebies. Those just draw people in.

The coupon codes are for stores, and those stores are the ones I've signed up with for affiliation.

And the survey section has a couple of affiliate links.

So my content is basically come and get it, haha.

My shopping area is divided into categories, like food, pets, kids...maybe I need to make a page for each section?

Ohh, um, this is really a dumb question, and I'm sorry cause I haven't read up on everything with google yet, bet :::blushing::: can we put more than one google adsense ad on each page?

Thanks for all of your help, you guys~ coming from someone who really appreciates it! ~Molly

Hi blackberrybunny, click on the "Beginners" link at the top left-hand corner of this page. That will give you a lot of introductory reading, and should help you rethink what you're doing.

Here are a few tips to help you use this forum...

This forum is divided into sections. (You can see them on the main page of the forum.) This format helps users find discussions they're interested in.

There's a Site Review section, an AdSense section, and so on.

This current discussion is about SSN numbers and tax IDs. It's not the appropriate place to ask questions about website content or how to use AdSense.

If you can't find a particular section on the forum about a topic in which you're interested, just use the most appropriate general section.

Don't give it out.
Contact the IRS and get a Employer ID# it's form SS4
apply as sole proprietor if you haven't formed a corp yet. This is the beginning of the process.

Here you go - it's like an SSN for a business. You can use it in place of your SSN.

http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/fss4.pdf?portlet=3

This is the mail in form. Look around, I'm sure they have an online version as well.

This is a valid number to use in place of your SSN, many banks require it to open a business account. Anywhere they ask for a Federal Tax ID you can use this instead of SSN.
