Again there are numerous things to take into account. PR can be faked nowadays and Google doesn't rely as heavily on it, even though it plays a factor. I have a site with a PR of 1 and it shows above PR of 6 and 7 for a high converting term in the #2 spot in Google.

Also, not all directories are good. Some which are spam or not maintained can look bad in the eyes of the engines, you have to see if the directory is showing up and the wording around it and how strong you link is.

Google also appears to have stopped liking reciprical linking directories as much because it just looks like they are being spammed so no, those are not always good even though they have a high PR.

One site I work with has a PR of 7 and rarely shows up for anything.

A few things to keep in mind, (this is a very shortened list)when selecting a directory or a backlink are:

1. The age of the site

2. The content of the site

3. How they link to you and if you link off of words

4. How many other outbound links there are per page(especially non related ones)

5. You do not want to just keep submitting to tons of them....do it over time....

for example, if you get listed in 50 PR 6 and 7 directories this month and then zero listings the next month, the algorithms will pick up on the fact that that is not natural backlinking.

PRs of 0-3 are also valuable in that if they are content heavy to your content, it will mean more in the eye of the engine.

What you might want to consider is submitting to a nice mix of directories over the months and try to average the same amount of unnaturally occuring backlinks so that it seems like you are getting them naturally as your site grows and progresses.

6. How often they update, clean and modify the directory.

What's important from an SEO point of view is getting relevant and quality (organic / natural) back links. You get this if you provide very good content that would make other sites want to link to your site. Also having back links to high PR sites helps your site on PR building as well - so submission to high PR directories will help also on your PR building IMO.

On a marketing perspective, having more targeted link backs is very important as these yields the highest conversion rate. In general, the more link backs you have - the more exposure your site gets - the more chances you get traffic from these back links Wink

That and that the search engines do take the content from that site and match it to the content found on yours, and if they are heavily related it doesn't just drive the targeted traffic, but it counts as a much stronger link making PR a little less relevant in the quality. A lower PR but keyword rich text links to an information heavy and relevant article is even more valuable than a link from a higher pr directory.

PR still does play a factor, but you have to remember, PR is for Google, there are still all of the other engines out there so i like to keep PR out of straight SEO conversations and only use it with Google.

All still sounds greek to me! Still trying to understand the back links. SO having many is good but having related back links is better? So does buying back links help or should it just happen over time?

Yes, many is good, related is much better, many related better still Wink

As for buying links . . . from what I understand it is dodgy territory, as somebody said above, create content good enough for folks to link to you.

Yes, related links are better for the most part. I can name a few examples where they are bad because the site or directory is overlinked or is using grey hat methods etc....then it might not be soo good.

Paying for links can be good if the directory is good, but if you appear to be a notorious buyer, your sites will not rank well.

Yes both are important. Just find a medium that works for you. If you buy, look to make sure it is a quality link, don't just buy because it has a high PR or because it has a million listings in it.

We can't give you all the answers or some of us would be out of business Wink. Do some research and read about SEO links what is strong what isn't.

Read forums specifically for SEO like this as well as webmastersworld, seobook, Abestweb, and you will learn how to determine which are good, which are not and which in your niche might be perfect.

In general, you want an authority site to link to you. But how to do that?

Hmmmm... provide something on your site that other people find valuable.

I recently got over 500 high PR backlinks to one of my sites and it only took me a week!!

Targeted back links would give you an edge over your competitors especially if you are buying it from reputable, authority and niche related sites. IMO, you buy links for traffic purposes and NOT for PR concerns.

Yes, they do. But still you need so called 'links velocity' - constantly increasing number of backlinks to your site. This helps very much to good SERPS

I have found that the more links I have has helped increase the PR. I have also found that links from other reverse funnel system sites and blogs has really created more hits but I am not sure about the conversion rate yet.
If you can find a reliable link person or site, it can really help! Getting a ton of links will help but I would prefer targeted links at this point without having to linkback. When I find that I will use it. If anyone has found place or site that does legit links, pm me or email me. That way it does not appear as advertising.

Depends on the type of submission that you have made.If it is paid then the moderator or administrator will quickly review it and add it.Also the category you submit to matters.Don't go for a premium membership as Google will not count that link as a backlink any more.
And as for DMOZ,it is hopeless.

A big YES. Someone was claiming in a forum that his site went up to 3rd position from 64th in google in three days by submitting press releases to directories. Directory submission is the only best method for obtaining one way links. Very Happy
