This is really interesting!

I have known the famous Wedding Favors site from Brad Fallon from the beginning, and saw it disappear from googles SERPs.

Now here Brad Fallon explaines WHY that happened.
(I have read before, they were penalized because of getting backlinks in a bad way, but that seems not to be so)

Here's a quick summary. Brad believes the problem was duplicate content.

Quote:
...when other sites carry our products, they almost always use the stock description. That means there are dozens of wedding favor sites that have the same products with the same descriptions.

Also, a programmer working on the site had created a file - one huge page - which contained titles and product descriptions for EVERY product on the site. That was the only page Google was displaying.

So they removed that page and rewrote a whole lot of the product descriptions to make them unique. Pages soon started ranking well again.

Brad says they weren't using any black hat SEO tactics.

Thanks, Allan. Smile

I didn't want to spoil the surprise, so I didn't write more.

The surprise was to me that NOT the sites with the duplicated content was penalized, but the original site!
I thought so far, that google keeps track of content so that they know which content is the older one, when it is duplicated.

Have to confess I thought as long as your content was spidered first by Google you are ok.

I too thought the only sites that would be penalised would be the duplicators.

There’s nothing quite so annoying as repeated content. You might even describe it as SEO’s worst nightmare. Never use content which is duplicated (or even just summarized) elsewhere on the internet —- even if you wrote it!

You can make a basic check for originality on http://www.copyscape.com if you’re not certain, and even if you are.

As for other sites copying your stuff, even if the content is your copyright and has been copied by someone else, it can hit your SEO if the copying site has a higher SERPS than yours!

I've also seen a couple of cases when site's PR went from 6 to 0 and a different domain, not the original, was in the google info:sitesname.com request.
This was because someone 'sitejacked' the original site with the same duplicate content and as a result the original site was banned.
