I have set up the bones of my website on a free site hosting (really just as a test - its my first website, so nothing lost when I decide I should have done things differently).

Anyway, (thanks to some help on here earlier) I've decided that in order to be successful, I need a proper domain name (What makes a good domain name?). Now, I guess that brings me to on important issue - do I retain the same focus that I have at the moment? The current site is basically just aiming for an audience to drive to an on-line chemist, whether it be to help them quit smoking, loss weight, etc (you can view it an http://www.onlinepills.bravehost.com). Now, I'm wondering, when I get a "proper" domain whether I should specialise, and use the other areas as just perpherial sections or drop them altogether. What do you guys think?

I also think (largely due to me not including enough content yet) promotes affiliate links too much (but there is only so much you can tell someone about quiting smoking that they don't already know without promoting products to help them!). With what level of affiliate promotion can you submit a site to search engines such as Yahoo & Google non-comercially?

If you have any other advice or constructive criticism, please let me know. Thanks.

Pete, if I were you I would look over the sites at results.sitesell.com ... not so much with an eye to "having" to get SBI, but to see how they use affiliate links in their content.

No content to quit smoking? You have got to be kidding! There are tons of things you can write about to help people quit smoking. Let the wind blow through your brain and carry your thoughts to ... creativity!

You can offer tips to help them through the cravings.

You can talk about the old movie "Cold Turkey" with Dick Van Dyke about a whole town that quits and how each resident dealt with it differently.

You can discuss what in cigarettes makes it addictive, and what doesn't.

You could do pages about the variety of toxins in cigarettes.

How about pages on health and medical statistics of smokers vs. non-smokers?

As far as do they already know it? Some do, some don't. But you can also do pages on reviewing the different options to quit ... cold turkey, patch, gum, step down, pills, whatever is out there.

I don't think it would be difficult to come up with 40 or 50 pages rather easily about this particular subject myself.

I think you might be better to focus on one niche per site, so you can build truly targeted content that gets the visitors that want to click to your merchants. Build one site, then move on to build the next one.

To be honest, your site as it stood when I viewed it before, was just an advertisement. I'm glad you are moving to thinking about the different ways to build sites and promote them.

Ok, insofar as your domain name. If you target "quit smoking" then a domain that relates to the subject is much better than a generic name. View some of the posts on this forum about SEO, Adsense, etc. to see what I mean. You definitely want to research the right keywords and phrases that will bring targeted visitors to your site, not just words that bring traffic. Remember, targeted visitors are much more likely to click and buy!

Hope this helps,
Debs

Hello Pete.

Here's my view on it...

Research your keywords as Debs suggests. Then reserve that domain with and without hyphens. Go for .com, .net or ,org in that order, but make sure both have the same ending. .com might be more expected, but the others will do just as well with the SEs.

Use the hyphenated domain as the real hosted domain and point the non-hyphenated version at it. (Do not host it sparately or as a mirror. At least not to start with.)

The hyphenated version may or not do slightly in the SE algos, but the important thing is that even if people link to you with just your domain name as the anchor text, this will still include your keywords as identifiable separate words. This is important, and becoming more important.

The non-hyphenated version is only to be used for verbal referrals, to catch direct type errors and to afford some protection against future competitors. Use the hyphenated version for all links.

I agree with Debs. Do not make the mistake that just because you know something, so does everyone else. We all tend to take our own "expertise" too much for granted.

With Google, "commercial" doesn't come into it.

With Yahoo, it's often worth going easy on affiliate links until after acceptance, and then adding a few more. Rolling Eyes Cheeky, maybe, but the way many people tackle the directories. You might to take a similar view with Adsense.

The problem is, I think it is impossible to tell which is which without detailed anaysis of quite a lot of traffic. Still, the quicker you start, the better! Smile

All the best,
Charlie.
