Good points of both the mega site (1000 pages plus) and the smaller niche sites (50 to 200).
I have 6 sites with 75 to 150 pages and Allan is right about the time element to promote your sites. (Articles, link partners, affiliate codes, etc.. x 6 is getting to be a lot of work.)
Why not try both? I have several smaller sites, so now my plan is to build a "mega-site" with over 1500 pages. It'll take a while, but I'll try to give you the pros and cons of each as they develop.
If anyone has already done this let us know what you think.
If it's any help. James Martell's latest cell phone site has over 1000 pages - and he knows what he's doing 
What I have is a niche and I am breaking it into "micro-niches" for the larger site. Even though they are all in the same topic, I think that each "micro-niche" will be interesting and individual enough to keep it on topic for strong SEO.
P.S. Think about your interest level to be on the same topic for 1000 pages - John has a good point about getting tired of the same topic over time - something else to think about.

I endorse both Ken and his daughter Nori on this subject. I joined Ken's SiteSell in May. Today my website "Basic Affiliate Marketing Help" is already number 1 in google search engine for the keyword basic affiliate marketing. It has a google page rank 3 and Alexa ranking of 176,000. I think it very much depends on what you are selling, the product. One well built seo site can prove to be more productive than a hundred others.

Maybe you can start with a small site. Then if you can manage it, you can proceed with a large one.
I believe earning money through Google Adsense in smaller niche sites is way different from earning money through Adsense in bigger sites. They have different techniques.
