ValueClick, which owns Be Free, has agreed to buy Commission Junction.
Story:

Commission Junction will be folded into the Be Free network.
It's sad to see competition in the affiliate industry lessening. I think it's even more important now than ever before that affiliates keep pressure on the networks and affiliate merchants to have ethical standards. _________________ Allan Gardyne

I read about it too sometime back. I really liked the cj interface. I am a member in both networks. Like you said competition is a good thing to have. But lets see,if they merge there will be more merchants under one roof which has both advantages and disadvantages.
But strangely, i don't see any announcements in the sites or i missed it completely. Lets see what turns up next.
To your success,

I'm hoping BeFree goes more with the CJ model. I know they have been working on signing up merchants to their OneCheck system, which emulates CJ. I too prefer the interface at CJ, much less confusing and easier to deal with than BeFree.
Time will tell though!

I know it's a bit of a generalisation, but haven't the networks always concentrated more on keeping the merchants happy rather than the affiliates? For example, their approach to affiliate theft and cookie duration, to name but two examples.
Consolidation in any industry often results in worse conditions for customers and suppliers alike, and it doesn't bode well here. I still think the extremely fragmented nature of the affiliate "industry" - with little public voice - makes it very hard to put pressure on anyone from our side.
The strongest weapon the affiliate has is choice of what he promotes - the chance to move to the competition, if terms are better. Consolidation amongst the networks makes this less effective, as would consolidation amongst merchants themselves.
Just my opinion,
Charlie. _________________ "Before I speak, I have something important to say."

It seems this provides an environment for a start-up to compete with Befree.
M&A's should spring business thinkers and Entrepreneurs into actively building a competitive venture. First mover advantage has been cited and has a place.
However, a start-up can target an arena and create distinction based on the largest complaint about a larger organization. That in itself makes for viable comptitor while also staying off the radar screen until strength lends itself to "make itself known."
I dig cj. I also dig shake-ups because, well, survival of the fittest and whatnot. |

Staying under the radar is a strategy I like to use whenever possible. Large players attract competitors. I prefer to be small but successful in several areas.
Stay small and be prepared to change direction fast.
Maybe it's just me,

Please change BeFree's interface over to CJ's interface!! CJ is so much easier to use, and faster too!
For all members of CJ who want to keep CJ as is, you should write them an email and let them know. I will. |

I was up at Be Free in early November and spoke with some of the managers there about the acquisition of CJ. They told me that even though the plans were to merge both services into one, that it was some way down the road and not in the immediate future.

As I live in the country that is not accepted by CJ (but BF still is, thanks God!!), I am very glad to hear this news.
Does anybody know when this actually may happen? And if BF buys CJ, does it mean that all CJ merchants will be accepting affiliates from the countries which are accepted by BF?
Thanks and good luck to ALL of you (especially to Allan - your health!),
Serge
