When you register a domain name, you provide contact details which identify you own the domain and are viewable by the public in the whois records, unless you pay an additional fee to make your details private.

If you change web hosting companies, it wouldnt be necessary to move your domain aswell, unless you wanted to. All you would have to do is change your domain name servers to point to your new web host. If you do decide to transfer your domain, there would be fees involved in this aswell.

I was just trying to provide you some advice. I can offer web hosting to you. You would have to register the domain name elsewhere which I could help you on.

athen,

Hopefully I can help clarify this for you.

If you purchased your domain through a hosting company they had to register it or have another company do it for them.

I use godaddy to purchase all my domains. When purchased its registered automatically. By using a company like Godaddy I am able to log into an account I have with them and make changes to my domains. An example would be where to direct the name servers or if I want my domain ownership info private or not. To list it privately is extra. I can also renew my domains through my account with them.

I have also had domains transferred to my Godaddy account from other hosting companies. If I recall correctly this service was free. They do it free because they know in the future you will have to renew or maybe you'll purchase other products or services from them.

If you have further questions feel free to contact me.

Registration of your domain name at one company and hosting somewhere else can be a bit confusing for anyone new to this, as I was just a short time ago.

I used godaddy.com when I first started, and them with the help of patient phone support from domainsoninternet.com, I moved everything there.

The best part is they walk you through any problem or question you have, without trying to sell you something else, like some other companies do.

They actually answer the phone 24/7 Very Happy
They do what they say they can do. Shocked
They have comparable prices to godaddy. Cool

Check them out. I hope this helps.

True, but I always prefer hosting and registering with different companies in case it's necessary to wave bye bye to the host. You need to make sure you are fully in control of where your DNS points and are not held to ransom in any way.

Just a thought,
Charlie.

Yes, this is excellent advice. The hosting company you love today may be bought up, chopped up, messed up, go belly up financially, and otherwise turned in to your worst nightmare.

Been there, done that, more than once.

If you put all your eggs in one basket, be prepared to lose the basket.

Directnic.com has good support too, I've been there for a couple years now, no worries.

You all are very helpful ,i just have a few more question Very Happy

1. I found an article saying that someone forgot to lock thier domain status & being transfer away by domain theft ?when this happened who in charge to retrieve this domain for you ?

2. A lot hosting company offered free domain register ,when you're going to change hosting company ,do you still own the domain name ,i heard some company kept your domain since you didn't actually pay for it.

3. Company like godaddy don't transfer your domain that has been registered or previously transferred within the last 60 day ,does it referred to all other hosting company or just godaddy having this law & is there any place just for domain register ?

4. How do i calculate bandwidth ?i know it depends on size & traffic ,can you all give me an example of a normal average size of webpage having visitor 100/day & 1000/day ,how much bandwidth it needs each ?

Thanks for helping a newbie ,

Hi, Athen
1. I found an article saying that someone forgot to lock thier domain status & being transfer away by domain theft ?when this happened who in charge to retrieve this domain for you ?

I think that locking the domain is a great feature to have; I also think it's a good idea to register your domain name with a company who you know will let you manage it yourself. Some good ones have been mentioned - some others are 000domains.com and 123reg.co.uk - I have used 000domains.com for quite a while now and their service is great. They give email support when necessary. It's much better to lock your domain than let someone take advantage of your hard work building up traffic to your site. To lock a domain at your registrars, as far as I know, all you have to do is check a button.

2. A lot hosting company offered free domain register ,when you're going to change hosting company ,do you still own the domain name ,i heard some company kept your domain since you didn't actually pay for it.

I'm sure there are reliable hosts who will give you a domain with the hosting package; you might find also that they only give you the first year registration and you have to pick up the tab after that. Might be an idea to check the details. This is one reason why I like to use an independent registrar; they don't hold me to ransom if I want to change the nameserver information.

3. Company like godaddy don't transfer your domain that has been registered or previously transferred within the last 60 day ,does it referred to all other hosting company or just godaddy having this law & is there any place just for domain register ?

I just checked the information on the 000domains site about domain transfers - here's the quote

Quote:
Transfers have become easier. By the new ICANN rules, the losing registrar cannot reject a transfer request due to non-response from domain owner/admin.

Before submitting your transfer request use our WHOIS search and make sure:

- The current admin contact email address is valid and you can receive emails with it. This is the number one failure reason for transfer requests. Approval request emails can be sent only to that address.
- Domain name has been registered/transfered/renewed more than 60 days ago. By ICANN rules a domain name cannot be transferred from one registrar to another within 60 days of its registration or within 60 days of a previous transfer.
- Domain name is NOT on hold/lock by the current registrar
.

4. How do i calculate bandwidth ?i know it depends on size & traffic ,can you all give me an example of a normal average size of webpage having visitor 100/day & 1000/day ,how much bandwidth it needs each ?

I don't think you should worry too much about bandwidth to start off. To get traffic to your site is going to take time; most hosting packages give you way more bandwidth than you'll use, especially at first. When you get your hosting package, the hosting control panel will show you your bandwidth and you will most probably get an alert if you reach the limit, at which time you'll be given a choice of going for a much bigger hosting package - or to pay the bandwidth charges. There are some things which will eat up bandwidth kind of quick - if you're going to run a standard web site with text and some graphics, then I'd be envious if you ran out of bandwidth in your first month Smile

I hope that helps a little; keep asking the questions, though Smile

The times I have changed hosts have usually been when they have been taken over, or undergone expansion or other large scale changes.

As far as I understand it, registrars are now compelled to abide by any transfer request, unless a domain is locked.

The registrars I use both strongly advised that everyone lock all domains when this legislation was brought in.

All the more reason to register a domain with a quality registrar like GoDaddy, irrespective of where you choose to host it. I mentioned being held to ransom before.

This applies to all registrars.

I don't think bandwidth is worth worrying about initially, either. Just make sure you use a reputable registrar and then moving hosts will not be a problem, should the need arise...

Unfortunately, when it comes to web hosting, putting them to the test is really the only way to find if they are any good.

Hope this helps,
Charlie.

P.S. For anyone wanting to register and manage a large number of domains, I can vouch for BulkRegister.

You have to pay a joining fee, so there isn't any point for just a couple of domains, but they are very reliable with good tools. A great deal of options are possible - many of which I don't fully understand, to be honest.

Neil Shearing recommended them years ago, and I have used them ever since. I also use GoDaddy.

Thanks ,i think i know a little bit more about hosting

Hi, Athen - when you buy a domain name, you have to tell the domain registrar where the domain is hosted - setting up the nameservers. You will be able to do this once you have chosen a web host.

Then when you buy hosting from a hosting company, they will have to make a space on their server for your web domain/site - and they will give you a hosting control panel. In that hosting control panel, you will be able to set up email accounts for your website, eg mail@yourdomain.com

Depending on the package you buy, you may find that the host gives you 10 email addresses/ 100 email addresses or just 1. After that, you will probably be able to use a program in your hosting control panel to send and receive emails without using Outlook Express.

I hope that helps.

Margaret

This will be the best advice you will ever receive. Buy all your domains at www.godaddy.com and then lock them, I think they come locked now as part of the deal, but as I was saying, and you have complete control over all the DNS, forwarding, and all pertaining to your names. I own over 400 domains and most of them are at godaddy.com because they are the best to deal with and I have dealt with them all. I own my own hosting reseller business so I don't need godaddys hosting service but if I did, I would use them too. No charge for this advice because I learned the hard way, I came up thru network Solutions, Tucows and Totalnic and believe me Dude, you will love godaddy if you have ever dealt with them boys. I have some at www.enom.com too and a few other places only because when I bought them at an live auction at www.dnforum.com they were already parked there.
