When I saw this news release I had to check the date to make sure it wasn't 1999. A company has just sold 100000 domain names for $164 Million. The value in the deal is the pay per click advertising displayed on the landing pages of these domains.

Here is the link for the article:

[Link corrected to make it work. Andre, there's no need to do anything fancy with an URL in a post. Just simply type it or cut and paste it. The forum software turns it into a hyperlink. Admin.]

I believe that is the deal that involved the smoothest internet marketer of our time... Ultsearch

Surely, you have seen his websites... go here to read up on the man, the myth, the legend...

The idea is absolutely brilliant. Regretfully, however, it does not serve any other purpose than to line the pockets of one (smart) person. There is no visitor benefit whatsoever in this...

Interesting articles those - thanks Andre and miltonh for posting. mikino I agree - these domains add no value whatsover. Must confess that I lost one of my sites a few years ago to the mysterious 'ultsearch' Embarassed Embarassed

I forgot to renew a domain - not a huge money earner but I was spending a couple hundred a month on Overture sending traffic to it and only realised that the domain had expired and been bought by ultsearch when I typed it in one day to check it. By then I had spent a few months worth of Overture clicks sending traffic to a domain which was no longer mine! In the words of Homer Simpson - "Doh!" Embarassed

Oh well, you learn from your mistakes. Very Happy Moral of the story - always remember to renew your domain names and keep your e-mail address at the registrars up to date. Actually, I think even a few big companies have made the mistake of forgetting to renew their domain name!

Hey,

I think it was pretty cool of him to sell back that domain for $400. At least he isn't a jerk or anything.

I think there should be new regulations for eg setting a safe period on expiry of domain like maybe 6 months, that domain even though expired cannot be bought over by anybody.

But what if someone "snatched" the domain one day after the 6 months?

I feel people have ample opportunity to renew their domains - and the vast majority of those who don't are just plain slack.

You'd have to be both extremely badly organised and deliberately ignore repeated reminders from your registrar that the renewal date was coming up.

(The new opportunities for unsolicited domain transfer requests - which must be acted on for unlocked domains - are slightly different, but most of these cases are from before that.)

Consider the real world equivalent...

You have a shop with a thriving business. Despite repeated requests from the landlord, you decide not to renew the lease, so he throws you out.

The new occupier decides to open a similar shop to yours to catch your old customers. Would you think this was unreasonable behaviour?

I think both scenarios only apply to people who are too badly organised to run the proverbial "booze up" in a brewery.

Just my opinion,
Charlie.
