Allan,

Despite the waiting and form filling, that sounds like a damn good hospital.

You won't need it, but, the best of luck mate.

All the best,
Larry Chamberlain.

Hi Allen,

Although I did not have aplastic anemia I feel I am a little familiar with what you are going through. I know all about the pre-testing and post testing that you will be going though. In 1995 I was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. I had a type of cancer that was very rare. I was treated at Hannaman Hospital in Pennsylvania Pa. where I live. The treatment I received was very aggressive for the type of cancer I had because it was rare. The tumor I had was the size of a melon and was wrapped around my aorta.

I went though 6 courses of chemotherapy (which was called CHOP), which significantly reduced the size of the tumor by 50%. Then the decision was made to perform a bone marrow transplant using my own stem cells because that had the highest success rate for cure for the type of cancer that I had. So I started getting shots of a drug called Nupergen, which stimulates new stem cell growth. It was this new stem cell growth that they started to collect for my transplant.

I went into the Hospitals bone marrow transplant unit, which is basically a clean room environment. Very similar environment in which they make semiconductors in. This keeps the risk of infection low.

The transplant started the week of Thanksgiving here in the US 1995. Before they performed the transplant I received several different types of chemotherapy in the hospital for 6 days straight in order to destroy my bone marrow. Needless to say this brings your immune system down to zero. Which they basically called day zero. After one day of rest they performed the transplant. This procedure was done using my own stem cells, which they collected from me several weeks ahead of the transplant.

Now the waiting begins. Now I had to wait for my immune system to return. How long does this take? All that they told me is that it could take as long as 4 weeks. Well, let me tell you Allen I was determined to spend my Christmas at home with my wife and not in some hospital. Will I ended up setting a record in that transplant unit my immune system was back in 2 weeks after the transplant, good enough to go home. So I spent a total of 20 days in the hospital.

It is now 8 years later and they claim I am cured. Cancer free. Allen, you will have your good days and your bad days and that is OK. The most important medicine that you can provide for your self is keeping a positive frame of mind through out this whole ordeal.

My prayers are with you

Bob

Wow! That's impressive, especially considering the nature of the ailment.

I'll see if I can beat it Wink

I've just had a bottom molar out. It all went well, but there was a bit of excitement. The oral surgeon discovered that the molar had three roots instead of the usual two. I suppose that's why my dentist had trouble when he tried to do root canal work years ago.

I'm feeling a bit woozy from pain killers so I'm on the Internet to help me think of something else.

The friendly nurses have set up a little desk beside my bed, so I can keep an eye on all the wonderful helpful posts on the forum.

I'm deeply grateful to everyone who helping make this forum so useful.
You're wonderful! Thank you!

Just a quick note... I'm not really in the mood for writing tonight.

In preparation for the chemotherapy, a nurse has removed the dual catheter that was sewn into my arm and a surgeon has replaced it with a fat triple-line catheter in my upper chest. The tube goes directly into a large vein near my heart.

I'm not sure if you want know such gory stuff.

I'm feeling tired, battered and bruised, with stitches in my mouth and stitches in chest, and suddenly for the first time I don't feel fit and healthy enough to undergo a course of chemotherapy. Too late for second thoughts now.

It's good to have my computer on a little desk by my hospital bed - it gives me something to think about besides my woes.

The chemotherapy will begin tomorrow. Can't say I'm looking forward it. However, in one way it's good - it means I'll be one step closer to getting all this messy stuff over and done with.

Thanks for all your kinds words. They mean a lot to me.

Special thanks to the wonderful people - you know who you are - who are making this forum a success.

Hi Allan,

I live on the other side of the world from you and we've obviously never met. I have been trying to make a living from the Internet for about four years. In that time I have paid money to various experts whose names are well known throughout the Internet marketing world.

Funnily enough the best advice I have ever received has been free. It drops into my mail box once a fortnight and I always read it. In fact now that I have sorted the wheat from the chaff it is the only one I spare my time to read.

It is rare indeed that I read your newsletter and don't find something useful in it. Many times when the going has been really tough the Thought For Today has inspired me in some way or another.

In return I would like to find some words of my own that will give you a lift at this hard time for you, but I can't find the right words to say.

It must make you so proud to think that you have helped people all around the world and you haven't charged them a penny for that help.

Allan you really are THE TOP GUY and the thoughts of so many people are with you now.

Dear Allan and Joanna,

I just wanted to let you know that you are in my thoughts and prayers during this very difficult time.

While not a particularly religious person, I am a spiritual one and definitely believe in the power of prayer. I firmly believe for every person who posts here, there are 100's more who are reading and sending their prayers and well wishes as well.

Please draw what strength you can from all the positive thoughts and know that if there is anything you need, all you need to do is ask. While we all may be worlds apart, I am pretty certain that we would all find ways to lessen your burdens, even with 1000's of miles between us.

Best wishes and kind thoughts for a speedy recovery from a successful procedure.

Hi Allan,

I truly do wish you the best.

I've been taking advantage of the wisdom and advice you dispense for close to a year now without so much as a "Thank you". So, thank you very much for your willingness to share so much with me. You have helped me to grow.

Now, get better! Do what you have to do to get strong in mind, spirit and body - don't give up. Why? Because I'm selfish! I want, no, check that - NEED - more from you my friend. I'm sorry to be so selfish Allan, but I can't help it. When we find a great source of positive and personal influence, such as yours, it becomes almost a necessity to keep that influence coming. Very Happy

Do what must be done and come back when you are able and strong. If you need anything, anything at all, you have hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of friends that, like myself, will give you the shirt off our backs.

You are in my prayers.

Dear Allan,

The good Lord is your Shepherd !

~~~ Psalm 23 ~~~
The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures,
He leads me beside quiet waters,
He restores my soul.
He guides me in paths of righteousness for His name's sake.
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil, for You are with me;
Your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
Surely goodness and love will follow me
all the days of my life, and
I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.
God bless !
