Post subject: Site Dropped Off the Face of Google
|
|
|
Google suddenly dropped one of my best sites from its results pages. I don't see any obvious reason for Google to do so. No crosslinking, no spam pages, no linking to "bad neighborhoods", just some of the best content on the Net for that topic. Anyone had a similar experience? Is there anything I can do about it?
Thanks,
Yaron

Same here for a site, and there's chatter about things over at WebmasterWorld. I know of a few other people that have been hit with perfectly good sites.
Not quite sure what Google is up to, maybe sometype of algorithm change going on? _________________ Robert

It can happen if your server is down when Google visits. If your site has links to it, Google should eventually find you again and you'll reappear in the index. _________________ Allan Gardyne

Allan,
I think their site is still in the index, much like mine. But it's showing up in the VERY bottom of the results. I went from being ranked 2 and 3 for some good terms, down to 600 over night. And ALL of the pages on that site dropped down, not just a few.
My site is still in the index, still have PR on the toolbar, and still has backlinks according to Google.
Just hoping it's a temporary glitch, not much else I can do.
EDIT: Yesterday, I had NO searchers arrive from Google whatsoever. This evening, a couple have trickled in on a few random terms. Hopefully, things are changing back. I'll keep everyone updated. _________________ Robert

Post subject: Sudden 80 percent drop in traffic
|
|
|
I've been working really hard to increase my traffic with useful, entertaining content. Page views were going up slowly but surely. Imagine my dismay to find yesterday that my traffic had suddenly dropped to a trickle.
I have a link to your RSS on my Yahoo page (still showing month-old items by the way) - but now I know at least I was not alone.
Before finding this thread, I had a theory I had been wrongly banned as a porn site. A few days ago I added a link to my blog and humorously used the initials for 'Frequently Unasked Questions' about camera phones. (Think of FAQ and work it out! It produces a word that Google just might interpret as pornese.) I immediately deleted the acronym from my template. But my traffic, if anything, has gone down some more.
Any help would be very, very welcome and I'll follow this thread. _________________ Use the power of facial expressions and symbols

Yes indeed. As an experiment I cut and pasted a section of my home page's first sentence into the Google search bar and surrounded it with quotes. My site came up, but it was at the bottom of a list of three sites. The other two were sites linking to me using that text in the description. One of the pages had a PR the same as mine and the other lower.

Yaron,
I'm currently facing the same situation with one of my best sites. My situation seems to be identical to yours. I tried your experiment and it produced a similar result. _________________ Ten Real World Sample Sites |

Ouch. I don't think that's a case of server down when Google visits. I could be wrong, but it sounds as though you're being penalized for something. If so, best of luck trying to figure out what it is.
The most obvious thing would be linking to bad neighborhoods. _________________ Allan Gardyne

Luckily, it was only one site for me, but as you can tell in this thread a NUMBER of people have been hit. My guess is some type of algorithm change or test.
I do plan on checking out the sites I link out to, though.
UPDATE: Checked my outbound links to link partners, merchants, and articles I've posted from other sites. None of them have been delisted in Google, they still have backlinks reporting in Google, and they still have PR on the toolbar.
I have had one minor phrase that one of my pages was ranking at 2 for yesterday, and this morning, but it's gone now. My guess is Google is playing around with something. I'll keep posting updates. _________________ Robert

My site was no where near the top 10, but it has fallen off the google top 1000. I checked all my link partners and they are all showing page rank and back links.
I also noticed one of my competitors that has been at position number 1 for at least 5 months is now missing from the google top 1000 for the particular keyword that they were number 1. This competitior is still listed in google and has a good page rank of 6 but has just disappeared.
If anyone figures out what is going on, please keep us updated.
Thanks,

My site fell off the face of google, too. I've been desperately trying to figure out why, with no luck. Must be something to do with links, although I've checked all my outbound links and none of them look like "bad neighborhoods". It's crazy how a site Google liked enough for 3+ years to rank in the top 10, now does not even show up in the top 1000.
And it's amazing how some sites seem to be hit hard, and others haven't changed much at all. _________________ Need help getting out of debt?

Yes my site also disappeared from the top 10 unexpectedly at the start of the month. It is hurting a lot too...with traffic down between 30-40% for the month so far.
Has anyone got any ideas what the change might be? I am sure it has nothing to do with linking to bad neighborhoods as I have only a few outgoing links and they are all reputable.
I wonder whether it might have something to do with crosslinking within the site? I dont know about other people with affected sites, but each page on my site has a large number of links to other pages in the site in a side menu bar to help navigation and also spread the pagerank.
Each of these keywords are fairly targetted but I wonder whether google may see this as being too highly optimised and penalise it? I notice that a lot of SBI sites are now using graphical links in the navigation menus and I wonder if this might help avoid the problem.
Also my keyword density is around 5-6% ... could this possibly be too high and hence now be treated less favourably? _________________ Download free card games at cardgames4free.com |

The biggest thing I've seen speculated is that some emphasis was taken away from links in and placed onto onpage factors, particularly LSI (latent symantic indexing) which looks for related words and how they match the query along with the keyphrase itself.
Your internal linking wouldn't be penalized; you have to link internally.

So, it might not hurt to apply some "Thememaster" to my older articles that have been hit. (Which was recommended to me in Gary Antosh's new ebook). _________________ Robert
