Can someone explain latent symantic indexing in more detail? ALso, is this update something to be concerned about or is it likely as time goes on our sites will appear back in at least the top 1000 as they are futher indexed?
Thanks,

Try some searches on Google for it.
Basically, Google takes the word you type in, and looks for that word on pages as well as in the anchor text pointing to that page, amongst other things. But they also take that word and determine other "related" words. They can determine what other words should be on the page talking about the keyword you type in, simply by analyzing all of the available pages that mention that keyword. Google then looks on your page for those other "related" words.
Make sense?
IMO, I don't expect this technology to go away. It will actually probably get even more sophisticated. Eventually, you type in a keyword, and it won't be required for the top results to mention the keyword on their page, let alone have backlinks using it as the anchor text. _________________ Robert

I did a Google search to see if you meant what I thought you did. (I think you do, but is Debs to blame?)
"latent symantic indexing" yields 9
Google said "did you mean..."
"latent semantic indexing" yields 43,200
(There's an SEO opp. for someone, perhaps.)
I remember the good old days of programming compiled languages and getting reams of syntax errors. There was no attempt to guess what I meant, just a cold, logical (computers are traditionally good at that) analysis of the characters put together to make the code.
You might consider syntax to be what you literally say, semantics what you really mean. Google et al are moving towards the latter (to satisfy searchers), but the exact way they do it is likely to remain another of those closely-guarded SEO secrets. _________________ "Before I speak, I have something important to say."

I think all of this 'mess' goes to show the importance of having a lot of content pages online. If you have many sites or lots of pages, you're bound to make money. Maybe each page will make less but it will add up.
It's always a numbers game.
So instead of worrying whether this affiliate marketing thing will work, put information on the Internet. The more you have, the better.
And if google decides that links (for example) are of little importance, your content pages will still be there. _________________ Ten Real World Sample Sites |

I think their site is still in the index, much like mine. But it's showing up in the VERY bottom of the results. I went from being ranked 2 and 3 for some good terms, down to 600 over night. And ALL of the pages on that site dropped down, not just a few.
My site is still in the index, still have PR on the toolbar, and still has backlinks according to Google.
Just hoping it's a temporary glitch, not much else I can do.
EDIT: Yesterday, I had NO searchers arrive from Google whatsoever. This evening, a couple have trickled in on a few random terms. Hopefully, things are changing back. I'll keep everyone updated. |
My site dropped off Google yesterday after 3-4 years of being on the first page, so would appreciate any info on what was up in February and did your site come back up the ranks so to speak. I'm still pagerank 3, have backlinks etc, but show up basically last on every search. I haven't done any changes recently, so would appreciate any ideas Thanks |

I dont know a great deal about the update as it didnt really effect my sites as they are yet to break the sandbox. However, many people with sites who were hit early Feb have said it was due to unnatural linking patterns ie. having a ton of links like site wides with the same anchor text pointing to your site. |

Best thing to do? Nothing. Continue doing what you have always done to build a great resource on the web. Continue adding content. Continue adding links. You'll be back. _________________ 2009 Insider Secrets

If you haven't done anything wrong, keep adding good material to your site and keep getting links from related sites and the search engines will eventually like you again.

You have to log in first before you can view. If you're not a member, I highly recommend you become one (either for free or the paid membership) and contribute and browse thru there. The amount of information dispursed thru that website is priceless and an asset to your success online. _________________ 2009 Insider Secrets

They lock a thread like that if too many people try to view it from an outside source. Try to go to the homepage and find that thread. Or better yet, try to search for that address in Google and access it that way. _________________ Robert

Yes, I have experienced this also. I will be reading my log files and notice that someone has just found my site through yahoo. Then, I'll paste the referrer url into my browser. When the results come up, my site isn't listed. I was complaining to my fiancee in the philippines about this while we were chatting. She went to yahoo and did a search using one of the phrases that someone had just used to find my site, and my site was listed in the results for her. But when I did the search from here in California, my site didn't show up in the listings. Maybe yahoo rotates the results based on the server IP? Or maybe it's some kind of out-of- synch web farm issue? _________________ Robert Payne

Thanks Voasi and Robert,
I was checking it out last night. I does look like a great forum, which I'm going to try to find the time to check out regularly!
It strikes me in general about this issue that Google, by cutting down so many of the well established sites, are going to just shoot themselves in the foot with anyone who is an AdSense host. OTOH, I wonder if that might be a factor in the re-ranking -- whether they're displaying AdSense or not. Yet another factor to consider.
I see many people saying that, although their Google referrals have dropped drastically, their PR is still the same. But I saw in another thread that they only update the PRs every quarter, so the PR rating might not have caught up with whatever has changed in the Google search algorithms. It will be interesting to see if these low referral sites show a much lower PR when that gets updated (this month, I believe).
