As a few people here might know I have just finished my first Martell style site. Only the product pages though, I'm starting to write my article pages now!

I have just checked in with my web host and got all the stats fro my first month online. Actually less than a month, I published on 13th Jan.

I've had some 92 unique visitors and 133 page visits. There is so much info and stats it's unreal!!

If I can be allowed a small geek moment, I have saved the page with the full breakdown of stats on. If anyone is interested I can email them to you to look at. Just send me a message with your email address.

Thank you geek moment over!

I feel like a proud father watching his son score his first goal. I'm all boastfull, even though it's still a baby site.

If you don't mind me asking, which host did you choose in the end?

Cheers,
Charlie.

I've just been looking over my old posts and realised I never replied on the matter of my chosen web host!

I ended up going with a company I found not far from where I live, in Manchester called Clook.net. I did a lot of research on web hosts and these guys have had good reviews every where I looked.

They have an excellent customer service, very fast response, and always keep you updated regarding any server situations via email.

Also have a good selection of CGI scripts as well.

I chose the starter pack which costs me about ?4.99 per month. I get 250mb web space, 5gig data transfer and loads of other goodies.

I sorted everything out through them, domain name as well. Although I am having to change my domain name fairly quickly because it was pointed out to me that I might have trouble with a copyright issue in the future if I stuck with my current url!

Thanks for the info.

Can't say I've heard of them, but then there are a few hosting companies around! Wink

Keep us posted of any significant developments - good or bad.

Cheers,
Charlie.

just to update anyone that is interested on my domain name issue.

I have changed domain today, Sunday 6th Feb, through my web host clook.net.

I'm now using the domain www.best-ticket-brokers.com, hopefully with no problems regarding trademarks, or copyrights!

I am now having to start the task of submitting my site to the search engines once again, and I think I might start a blog and see how that goes. Seems to be alot of positive stuff about blogs and indexing at the moment.

Well, any new webmasters reading this who are looking at a web business, regardless of which "guru" you choose to follow, heed my advise. Check for any copyrights and trademarks on your chosen domain name.

I just took a quick look at your site. I like the text-based template...

How about just a touch more orange lower down the page - to the complement the header and break the "whiteness" a little? A small graphic of some kind?

Secondly, I'd chop that counter on the RH side.

Good to see you're up and running! Smile

Cheers,
Charlie.

why do you suggest to chop the counter?

Personally, I hate them - and it's not just me.

Many of us associate counters with amateurish personal homepages...

What is it supposed to achieve? It risks looking like you have included one as a gimmick for gimmicks' sake.

If you have some evidence that it will help then fair enough, but I think you run the risk of putting certain people off. Maybe it won't bother "ordinary" people, but as I said - what's the gain?

Just my opinion (but it's a strong one). Smile

Cheers,
Charlie.

IMO a counter looks really amateurish and unprofessional as well.

When I saw it I thought it was all pretty nice until I came to the counter - then I was like - oooh.

advice taken. The offending counter has now been removed.

I think I put it on as an ego thing. As it's my first ever web site I wanted to know how many people actually visit my site, but I realised I can get all those stats from my web host any way.

Once again many thanks.

Just have to get on with sorting out some article pages now. I was thinking of going and using Elance, or a similar provider as I don't have the timer at the moment to write the pages my self as I'm working full time to provide the capital, and support my self whilst the web site thing takes off.

Have any of you any expeirience with these type of web content providers?

Hi christof,

I use eLance regularly, and I'm extremely happy with my writers. I get 300-400 word articles written for $5 each. I have two writers each writing 15 articles per week.

This allows me to build one 30 page niche content site per week.

I haven't decided exactly how many I'll build (working on #8 right now) but it will likely be somewhere between 15-25 sites.

Ideally, I'd like to also build a dozen "Underachiever" style sites for diversification purposes, and my success or failure in doing that will determine how many niche sites I ultimately build.

Once I have a number I'm happy with, I'll go back and have additional content added to those sites.

Over time, I'll have numerous sites with several hundred pages of content, all thanks to the fantastic writers that I work with through eLance.

Gary Antosh (speedguide) has written an ebook called "How to Create Web Content Fast". It's a must-read if you are unfamiliar with sites like eLance and Rentacoder. It helps you avoid the potential pitfalls that hiring writers can sometimes bring. Highly recommended. It's at www.web-writing.com .

Hope this helps!
~Mike

What type of information do you have to provide the writers?

I simply provice them with a list of keyphrases, the topic of the site, and what the site will be about.

At the beginning, you may have to give them more info, especially if you are looking for the articles to be written in a specific direction (for example, if you want the writer to provide content that "pre-sells" the visitor, if you want them to talk about specific products, benefits, features, etc.)

I tend to like articles that primarily provide general information, so my requirements are less strict then what others might use.

A lot has to do with your writers too. After some trial and error, I've found two that really "get it" when it comes to writing content for the web.

Mike,
Looks like you're on a roll and have a s-y-s-t-e-m in place. Good one!

How much time do you spend on average 'checking' the 30 articles per week before publishing them on your sites? - I am thinking of grammar/spelling, overall site-theme-style, and checks for plagarism etc (with all due respect to your two writers. Just good business sense IMHO.)

I have Gary's writing web content book as I intend to do the first 3 or so sites on my own to "get my feet wet" and learn "hands-on".

Then I'll look at doing similar to what you're describing and maybe also take a look at Gary's other book covering "outsourced content writing" using some of my profits to come :) . (although I've already learnt a lot by using James's handbook, special reports and just checking out elance/rentacoder sites.)

Kanpai!

Konnichiwa, cruthin! Very Happy

(Hope I spelled and used that correctly!)

At first, I spent several minutes per article checking my writers work. Once I was comfortable with their handle on things, I switched to just scanning them. I still do find the occasional typo. But it's rare, and now I find that I can do a 30 second scan of each article, and know that everything is okay.

The real secret to all of the methods of the "guru's" is to develop a system that works for you based on the teacher you are following.

Sticking to that system will automatically take you where you want to go. I highly recommend it!

Take care,
~Mike
