I have a couple questions with regard to some linking techniques.
If I want to cloak clickbank links and prevent pr from passing to them, how can I do that? Do I use a php file or some sort of redirection file? For example, on the right side of this forum page there is a menu and at the bottom of the menu and page there is a link to "affiliate classroom" that when you click on, seems to redirect you directly to the program even though the actual url makes it seem like you are going to some page on associateprograms.com.
How exactly can I do that? Does that technique, whatever it is, prevent pr from being passed to the affiliate program? Does it stop pr loss/leak at all to the link? If I wanted to cloak and not allow any pr loss to the link (without using the new nofollow code), how could i do that?
Can it be done for clickbank, sitebuild it and other similar affiliate links?
Can it be done for CJ links? I'm assuming no - though you can cloak those- not sure if pr is passed.
Additionally, I would like to do this for my about page, privacy policy, terms etc.
I would really appreciate any help on this. Just if you could tell me the code to use and what to do, and the effects of it (no pr passing or leak, cloaking the url etc). I am somehat html literate and know some css stuff.

Thanks rob, but as I stated, I'm looking for a way to do it without the new "nofollow" code addition (and a way that cloaks the url at the same time).
I believe it is done with php and redirection.
Actually, I think it is done with dynamic links. Its ok, I'll find out. |

Allan does that with .htaccess modifications, which is the simplest method, no scripts required.. I would highly recommend using the new Google code for preventing PR loss, after all, Google endorses this itself.
If you don't set it up right, you'll still lose PR to the redirect script you use, which is the last thing you want.

| Robert, what is the thing you are doing with tigerdirect? You are using some kind of on site cgi bin code. What is the benefit of doing that? Does it not pass pr? |

The only reason I use it is because SBI provides it to track what links are clicked on. It's built into the package. No other reason.

Actually, the way SBI uses "onclick" within the <a> tag is a nice way of tracking links that you want to pass PR to. You might be able to use a similar method for pages you control.

I'm using .htaccess redirects. They're fairly simple to use once you learn how, don't involve scripts and don't cost anything.

You need a web host which gives you access to your .htaccess file if you want to try this stuff. You can't do it with an SBI site.

I'm not sure. However, I do know that it's occasionally possible to get one of those links ranked highly in Google.

Yes. You can do it with any affiliate program which has simple ordinary links.

I haven't experimented with .htaccess redirects and CJ, Be Free or LinkShare links. You'd need to get the merchant's permission if you want to change those links. Perhaps someone else can help you there.

why i ask is because i had a pretty good google page position till i added 2 banners,,spawning off several redirects..the company from wich the banner came from gives options to (Encrypt link) (set link to open new window) and (hide tracking in link)
so........ wich to set it to?

No, it's short for PageRank - a factor in Google's ranking algorithm, but not the position in the results.
Do a serach for "Google PageRank".
It's a highly complex topic, where conjecture reigns supreme. Many people obsess over a simplimlistic version of it.

Just use javascript.
none of the Search Engine spiders activate the JS so your link will apear to HUMAN visitors, and it won't even exist for the SE robots.
SIMPLE. |
