Post subject: Is it OK to have links to a .htaccess redirect?
|
|
|
I recently changed all my pages extensions from htm to shtml in order to make ssi work.
The problem that I discovered today is that I have submitted an article to a few article banks in the past, with links to several .htm pages on my site. My .htaccess is updated, and it redirects those links to the new ones, so any person interested in my website can still reach it.
However, I'm thinking about the SEO part of this. Will search engines see these links to the .htm pages, that have a .htaccess redirect to the new .shtml pages as direct links to the .shtml pages?
Interestingly, my new .shtml pages curently have no pagerank, but when I follow a link that leads to the original .htm page, it redirects to the new page, and it also gets page rank. The pages had page rank before I changed the extensions.
I updated the articles at the article banks that I was registred, but there are several article banks that I submitted that article where I have not registred, and now I can't update them. Also, some webmasters already copied those articles and added them to their sites, so I can't update the links there either.

If you're messing with the .htaccess, I believe there is a way to set .html files to be processed by the server like .shtml files.
I haven't messed with this stuff in a while, so I'm not too sure. _________________ Robert

Yeah, we already discussed that, and decided against that option. I forget the post it was in though...
If your using a 301 redirect (a permanent redirect) then the SE's will follow the HTM file, then get redirected over to the SHTML file. The SE will make a note of this change for future use.
On any articles that you have the ability to update, I would correct the links, just to eliminate that extra step. If you can't update the link, then just make sure your 301 redirect is in place, and your good to go. _________________ Eric D. Burdo
