I built my first site just recently and for about 2 weeks I had the number one spot for a keyword on overture that gets about 400,000 impressions all to myself. This word was bringing me in some very good sales daily, all of a sudden I have a competitor out bidding me and I cant even compete becuase this isnt an affiliate site this is a merchant site (not the merchant I'm promoting) and since he owns his own product he can offord to pay about 80 cents a visitor where I can only offord about 15 cents. This site was turning out to be great, but now I got competition and other websites outbidding me for less popular keywords also. What should I do!?!
Thanks

Tommy,
Hang in there... look for other keywords. If you're paying .15 and their paying .80 he's can't last too long... that's not even good business. Sometimes being #2 isn't bad. This is a competitive business. You've good to keep looking and hammering away.
Also check out some of the other PPC engines.

I agree with Speed. keep on trucking and stay on budget. Don't get into a bidding war with the merchant. Let them spend the bucks. All you want to bid is enough to get in the top 3 (if it fits your budget and ROI).
Niches can become competitive, but staying on top of the competition, and staying within your budget will go a long way toward keeping you competitive over the long term.
Hope this helps,

Hello Tommy.
Are you #2 now or outside the top 3?
I would expect that you might still get very good click throughs from #2 or #3, not just #1.
If you are still in the top 3, but losing the clicks to your competitor, maybe you need to refine the title and description to make your listing look more attractive.
Also, if this is a new niche and the competition does get too much, how about building a content site and profit from your "competitors" via AdSense? Is this feasible?
Hope this helps,
Charlie. _________________ "Before I speak, I have something important to say."

Charlie made excellent points on tweaking your ad, as well as Adsense
You might also want to look at your site and try to improve conversion there as well to be sure you get the best ROI from the visitors you do get.
Hope this helps,

Start adding more keywords and search phrases and research other possibly phrases as well. Don't try to outbid the other merchant as you're likely to get into a 'bidding war' and it could cost you money. Instead, research more keywords and consider expanding your campaign to other PPC search engines like Google Adwords and Findwhat. _________________

Thanks for all the great advice everybody, I've done what you've all said I refined the listing to be more attractive found tons of other keywords, 2 of them had searches for 300,000 and 200,000 a month, I got second spot for both of them for 11 cents and I also spent a few hours improving the preselling. Now about adsense I'm not to sure about it becuase I checked it out and some of the people in my niche are promoting there affiliate link through adsense and plus when I'm averaging about 10 cents a click I doubt I'll even get 10 cents for each click to adsense in this field so I think I would lose money there seeing that I only do get all my traffic through overture. It's a very overlooked niche I've got almost 300 keywords all to myself with no comeptition, and ever since I've refined the listing and added new keywords and fixed the preselling sales have skyrocketed. I was grossing about $250 a day in gross sales at about $100 in clicks, that number seems likes its gonna grow to $450-$550 a day at $200 for clicks.
Thanks you guys very much, greatly appreciated

I was planning on doing this, but like I said I built this site about 2 weeks ago and considering its my first I still havent got my first check and I only have enough money in my bank to cover the clicks on overture until the check does get here, but when I do get my first check I'll have enough money to start promoting on google adwords and findwhat
Thanks

And why do you have to see it?
I don't want to increase the competition so there for I can't show you, the site's bringing me in $300-$350 a day in profits I sure wouldn't want to ruin that by giving away my first and obviously succeful site so other people can jump on it and make the competition even worse than it already is....

one question thoug, if you built it 2 weeks ago how did you manage to get it listed for traffic to get there in 2 weeks doesnt google take a month before you see it?
or do you mainly work with pay per click only right now
how long did it take you to design the site?
and does it use Commission junction? |

I used a free web template and 95% of my traffic comes from PPC's. I got listed in google within a week of putting up my site, but then my pages disappered from google and then some came back and then away, not all my pages are listed yet and the site's about a month old, but currently I'm getting about 100-150 visitors a day from google and about 2000-3000 visitors from PPC's a day. The reason I got listed in google so quick was because I started getting people to link to my site as soon as I put it up.
I't might have took me like a week to design the site I did edit the template some, I didn't try to do it all at once thought I was promoting 3 products when the site when up since then I've added 2 more products to promote.
This site is old news to me though I'm already working on my second site which I could probably finish in a day, I recommend as soon as you come up with a simple design stick with it for all your sites, its what I'm going to do. I know I don't want to spend no more time fiddiling with html I spent to much time doing that with my first site If I were to come out with a new design for all my sites I would never get anything done.
Go to google and do a search for "html templates" or "simple templates" they look good and load fast and are easy to modify if you know the basics to html, I wouldn't use any graphic templates though, content is more important than design. Some of the most successful affiliate sites have simple designs just take a look at associateprograms.com could it get any simpler?

It has never surprised me that most people are hesitant to share their good results with others. (James Martell stands out as an exception, here.)
In my opinion, never feel obliged to "prove" anything to anyone if you're asking a question, or answering a question for free (not promoting anything.)
On the other hand, if you're asking me for money (even an affiliate commission), I'll probably ask for detailed proof. Just getting cynical in my old age.
Just my opinion,
Charlie. _________________ "Before I speak, I have something important to say."
