Post subject: MSN dumps Looksmart--Relevant for SBI owners

MSN decided to not renew its contract with Looksmart, which expired on Jan 15th, 2004.
Because Looksmart also owns Zeal, which partly powers MSN search, those SBI'ers who are receiving MSN traffic by way of Zeal will take a hit (in some cases, significant hit).
Just a head's up.
What a fickle game this is.

I agree ... fickle indeed. But another reason I love SBI (they keep on top of most of that stuff for me) and why I love great forums! What SBI's newsletter may miss, someone picks up on and feeds me!

LookSmart stock lost over 50% of its value today. Must have had most of their eggs in the same basket.

Does anyone know what search engine, if any, will supply the "Directory Listings" that currently show up first on results pages at MSN?

The results will be supplied by Inktomi.
Currently MSN search is powered first and foremost by the Looksmart directory (which includes Zeal). Then, it is backfilled by Inktomi.
So, anyone with strong listing in Inktomi will be the winner with MSN for the time being.
However, Inktomi is pay for inclusion. You gotta pay 39 dollars to submit only one page of your domain and an additional 25 dollars for each page of your site. That's ludicrous. A 50 page site will cost you over a 1,000 bucks to submit it, and there's no guarantee they will even accept it.
Keep in mind that Microsoft is developing their own search technology. Their agreement with Inktomi right now runs thru Dec 2005 I believe it is. However, they may end this agreement at any time (and I fully expect them to do so).
Inktomi was purchased by Yahoo recently. And since Yahoo and Microsoft are competitors, the current relationship between Inktomi and Microsoft is emphemeral.
In Jan 2004, I may submit my main URL to Inktomi and pay for inclusion.
But I'll wait till Microsoft drops Looksmart and see how much my traffic is impacted before I make any decisions.

Hi,
Inktomi is ppi, but they will include all pages you submit and pay for. But then ranking is not guaranteed, that is done through their normal algos.
They do have free crawling also. But don't submit. If you have many incoming links, they will spider for free. Their spider, slurp, is said to be aggresively indexing pages now. But it will take time and you need good number of incoming links. It is better to get links and wait.
I submit my main page through ppi. I am waiting for slurp to index my other pages.
