Post subject: Can geocities account rank high in serps?

I was just wondering if a geocities free site would be able to rank well in google serps? Assuming that all the SEO is taken care of. I guess what I am asking is if there is any kind of penalty in Google for a free site hosted by yahoo geocities. _________________ police jobsPolygraph

Apart from the potential problem of keywords in the domain (which is only a small part of the puzzle), I don't know of any problems with getting free sites ranked. (There are examples out there, after all.)
I've always thought the big problem is credibility with potential visitors - both getting the click from the SERPS and the preconceptions if they arrive. Free = Unprofessional in many people's eyes.
But these days, I wonder if this is too much of a generalisation...
Consider the "info publisher" content site model (using Adsense), for example...
Is it possible that people looking for information might actually find the free site much less of a problem? Could the amateurishness of it all (if combined with a friendly writing style) actually lower the defences and make people more inclined to click Adsense ads, say?
Personally, I'm very anti free, but maybe people like me aren't representative of your target visitor.
Just a thought,
Charlie. _________________ "Before I speak, I have something important to say."

I have seen some free sites in what i thought would be a competitive phrase. I am new to SEO but I would think when you do see a geocities site in the top 10, that is a good market to be heading into.
Am I right with this assessment...if you see freebie sites in the top 10 of several of your keyphrases, then it means its not very competitive and with some good basic SEO, you should rank in the top 5?

Today's search engine algorithms are primarily based on incoming links and content on page. Unless an IP has been black-balled (surf term ), there should be no reason why a free web wouldn't rank highly...competitive keyword phrase or not.

I would go as for as not being sandboxed at all. Most free web spaces are interior pages of the root web (ex. www.geocities.com/yoursite/) or 3rd level domains (also known as subdomains). These free spaces are 'attached' to an already established/older site. _________________ 2009 Insider Secrets
