It looks like the toolbar PR dancing has settled down. I thought I would get whiplash, every time I would look at my site for the last week, the PR had changed.

Unfortunately there's bad news on my main site. I have always had a PR5, and now it's a PR4. In looking around at my links, I think DMOZ did me in. I used to have 2 links from there, one from a PR6 page, one from a PR5, to deep linked pages. Now it seems they've consolidated my site to a single link to my home page, and only from a PR5 of theirs.

I always say things like this work out for the best. It woke me up to the fact that I need to get some more links anyway, one-way is preferred. So that's on my to-do list.

The funny thing though, is I've had a blog going for a few months, the only link to it is from my main page on another site (which is now down to a PR3, used to be a PR4). The blog has a PR4, for crying out loud, better than the only link to it (well, maybe some blog directories but if so they don't show on the backlinks).

The good news is that free traffic from Google has never been better, and AdSense income is way up in the last two months. So it's even more proof than ever that the toolbar isn't so important anyway. Just a way to keep score in a game, sort of like in American football, the time of possession and total yardage can be won by a team that gets creamed by 21 points.

Remember also, that the PR of the page linking to you is only half of the story...

The other half is how many pages (including yours) they link to from that page. The fewer the better.

It's important to try and influence your category listing (from a directory) for this reason.

Just a thought,
Charlie.

Charlie, yes I know, but thanks for bring up the point about getting links from pages with many outbound links. I do try to find the least crowded directory page whenever there are reasonable multiple choices for that very reason.

As I mentioned in one of my blog entries, I'll take a PR4 link from a page with no other outbounds any day, over a link from a PR5 with 100 links on it.

To add to this, from what I've seen and read, Google is putting more weight on Topic specific pagerank, so if the topic of the page with a link to your site matches the content of your site, it will carry more weight.

This is all the more reason why having an article posted on another site is great.

It's a one way link (no bad neighborhoods to link to), the content is relavent because it's your article, you can pick the anchor text of the link, and there won't be as many other links in an article rather than a link partner page.
