I have several web sites with the name in front of the .htm like pokersites.htm, tv.htm...etc. Would it be better to have index.htm or does it matter to search engines? _________________ Rent DVDS Online

From a technical viewpoint, it doesn't really matter for search engines... but for the human visitors, I would have an index.htm (even if all that does is redirect to the name.htm document). This makes it a bit easier for them to get to your site, and they don't have to remember if your pagename ends in .htm, .html, .php, .asp, .aspx, .cgi, .pl, etc etc etc. They can just put in the URL.
Having the name.htm document could help your SE rankings slightly, since it will give you one more location to have your keywords. _________________ Eric D. Burdo

index, home, default, and similar start page file names for a site are considered the default loading page ... if someone types in your domain with no page file reference, browsers (and SE's) look for the default home page names ... if they don't find one, one doesn't auto load unless you set it up on your server to load.
Also, if you don't have a default page loading with just a domain, anyone and their brother can access your files, folders, structure, etc. which may include private files you don't want accessed, like cgi bin, email addresses, etc.
Bottom line ... You should always have a default page that will auto load on your server for the root folder and every subfolder (subdirectory) to avoid snoops and hackers, and to allow visitors and SE's to traverse your site easily.
Now, as far as a redirect of your home page, I don't recommend it ... SE's don't like redirects and particularly don't like home page redirects within the same site. _________________ Learn how to turn keyphrases into quality, well-targeted articles your visitors and SE's will love with Gary Antosh's new ebook "Web Content Made Easy!" |

To keep everyone happy, you might like to have a word with your host about modifying to set "your-keyphrase.html" as the default...
You can set things up as a prioritised list, so that "index.html is still the second file to look for if "your-keyphrase.html" isn't present.
Cheers,
Charlie. _________________ "Before I speak, I have something important to say."
