Anyone notice an overall drop in earnings from Adsense over the past month? Can't say I'm surprised, just curious to see if anyone else is in the same boat.
If you have seen a drop over the past 10 days or so ... that's normal this time of month ... it should climb again anytime.
Advertisers who spent their monthly budget frequently disable ads toward the end of the month, then pick them up again the first week or so of the new month.
Otherwise, I am seeing an overall increase.

When it comes to anything new, I tend to watch for a while... and let a few other pioneers take those arrows!
I was one of those worried that the initial high pay out might drop away quite soon, and was reluctant to spend much time based on any false highs. (Better to start a business in a recession, so to speak.)

Anyway, it seems like Google is managing to strike a nice balance when it comes to satisfying advertisers, a necessity for things to work out at all, let alone enable them to continue paying publishers a decent return. There were bound to be one or two glitches, but most people seem happy - on both sides of the fence. Those guidelines for publishers are there for a reason, not just to make things difficult!
I think it might be time to see what I've been missing!

A similar thing happens with Overture. If you are on the other side of the fence - interested in buying traffic - you can sometimes get some nice cheaper premium listings at the end of the month by exploiting just this trend.

Hey 2create what's with the comment ...

I joined AdSense in mid-July ... and so far the results have been nothing short of amazing.
It seems that you're expecting the worse? For all we know Google may indeed increase their payouts to us.
Personally, I assume that the fluctuations in the payouts is directly related to the competitive nature of the pay-per-click business which is always up and down depending on competition, seasonal events (ex: Mother's Day), etc.
Let's expect the best from Google ... so far they are performing beautifully.

Maybe not if they think everyone's happy enough already...
How about a few of you "superaffiliates" starting to pretend you're not quite so happy, and reduce the Adsense exposure a bit? Maybe a slight reduction in (your) income in the short term might result in a better deal for all of us over time!
Just a thought,

Adsense payouts are already competing with the best %'s at Clickbank ... what more do you want?
The only way to increase EPC would be if advertisers increase their bids ... which will only happen when they see good conversions from Adwords/Adsense content publisher sites.
What can Advertisers do to get better conversions? Target their ads more precisely, and have the ad url go directly to where it needs to go ... not just the home page
How can publishers help Advertisers get better conversions? Offering targeted content and preselling effectively.
I think of it more as a two way street with a block party in the middle where everyone meets and has a great time
Just my 2 cents

Deb, Well said. That would make a huge difference to any advertisers conversion rate. _________________ Warmly,

I started with Adsense in July like James... and I've been very pleased. As new and more content is added to my sites... I only see results improve.
If there is any up and down it is more based upon my site traffic. Some day up some day down.
Step back for a moment... this is all a numbers game. You see more traffic during the week driving to work than on weekends. Net traffic is no different.
Google is a great engine and you just need to give them google food.
James... I enjoy your affiliate buzz... keep up the good work.

Sorry, I've notoriously hard to please.
That said, if you don't ask, you don't get...

Surely, Google could give publishers a larger share of the existing PPC pie?
Think supply and demand - I bet the large publishers (with happy advertisers) get a larger slice than most. That's how the world usually works...
So, now the advertisers have been appreciating the good clickthroughs from targeted traffic entering via publishers' content sites, maybe it's time to pull down adsense (but say nothing). When Google ask why, say "not lucrative enough". At the same time the advertisers will be complaining - "where's our traffic gone".
If Google is squeezed from both directions at once, maybe publishers can benefit.
OK, I know that online publishers are a notoriously fragmented and cut throat bunch - and the chances of getting a campaign together would be zero - but that was my dream!

I'm not expecting the worse. I was just assuming that these "high" payouts wouldn't last too long but it seems that I'm one of the few that have noticed a drop. On Sept 23rd, my payoffs have dropped quite a bit and haven't rebounded. It could be the niche that I'm in....who knows.
Starting around the 20th of the month until about the 7th you will very likely see a drop in EPC ... this is the time advertisers suspend their advertising because they have used up their monthly budget. Starting around the 1st thru the 7th, they restart their programs for the current month.
If you see a drop in CTR, consider changing up the style of ad, or color. Check and be sure relevant ads are still being shown on your site, and that PSA's are not increasing. If you get a lot of repeat visitors and high page views per visitor, they start to get "ad blindness" to the same old thing and need variety. If the ads aren't targeted well, they won't get the click in the majority of cases.
If you see a drop in impressions, check your traffic logs to see if your traffic is dropping. This could be an indication of drops in rankings on the SE's, or a problem with people accessing your site for some reason. Well worth a check to see what could be causing this.
Hopefully, you just hit a cyclical thing that will revert to normal after a week or two, but until you have several months in the program, and keep stats yourself, you really won't know what is cyclical for you and what isn't. Each niche has a tendency to follow it's own cyclical pattern
I use a spreadsheet, and copy the daily stats into it from reporting in Adsense, then I also put in daily unique visitors and graph different charts showing average EPC (earnings per click) impressions, CTR (click through rate), and then compare all within the scope of daily uniques and page views. I can see definite patterns and know some of the cycles already.
Hope this helps,

If you see a drop in impressions, check your traffic logs to see if your traffic is dropping.
Interestingly the AdSense impressions for my site dropped significantly some time during last Sunday and has stayed lower than usual since then. Although I can't compare it to any log right now, I do suspect this is actually an error in Google's stats since:
a) I can't think of any single factor that would cause such a decrease in the actual number of visitors (it's an old established site that gets visitors from so many different sources even a sudden drop in Google ranking wouldn't account for the difference)
b) my AdSense click-throughs and earnings didn't change, just the impressions count.
Oh well, it might be just a freak chance, and since I seem to make the same amount of money still, I'm not too concerned.

Very sound advice. I do almost exactly the same myself. Not only does it allow me to follow and learn the "cycles," it is also a very powerful tool for tweaking ad placements, ad colours, ad styles etc. for maximum effect. _________________ Frank Nordberg
