Post subject: Alan's Redirect Page - How?
|
|
|
Hi,
If you go to Google and search for "RSS Made Easy" without the "Quotes"
you will see Alan's page as No1.
http://www.associateprograms.com/rss-easy
This is a redirect to the main sales page of Adrian Ling's site.
Could someone tell me how alan has done this?
To me it does not appear to be a standard redirect and the fact that it ranks so well makes me even more sure it is not just a standard redirect.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

Hello Wesley.

Type...
| Code: | | view-source:http://www.associateprograms.com/rss-easy |
...into your browser and you'll see Allan is using a meta refresh to redirect to Adrian's page.
Google is simply using the source code of the destination page to decide how Allan's page should be ranked. In other words, the on-page factors are coming from Adrian, but the off page factors such as external links are determined by how and from where Allan links to his own page.
Hope this helps,
Charlie.
P.S. This view source method can be used to view any client side redirect code such as meta refresh or JS, but server redirects (such as via .htaccess) will just result in the source code of the destination page. _________________ "Before I speak, I have something important to say."

Who's Alan?
This is one of those extremely rare occasions when Charlie is wrong. Yeah, I know it's hard to believe, but this is proof that it can happen.
I'm not using a meta refresh. I used to use meta refreshes ages ago, but I switched just about all of them over to .htaccess redirects, which I reckon are better.
It won't rank highly for long. For it to keep its rank and compete with other sites, I'd need links on high-PageRank pages to that URL, using "RSS Made Easy" as the anchor text in the links. It should be easy to beat my ranking.
Here's an article I wrote...
"Why .htaccess redirects are better than meta refreshes"
http://www.associateprograms.com/search/newsletter205.shtml
...and the links to more resources.
You need a web host which gives you access to your .htaccess file if you want to try this stuff. You can't do it with an SBI site. _________________ Allan Gardyne

Actually, I've got plenty of proof that being wrong isn't very rare at all - I just try to keep it to myself.
But in this case, I spy some fun and games...

No, you're certainly not now...
I just rechecked, and the view source is returning the source code of the destination page, so no client-side redirect now...

I realise that's what you usually do (and I don't blame you), but when I originally posted I really did view source myself - and the meta refresh line (the source of the hop page) was clearly visible in the resulting notepad window.
This leads me to one of three conclusions (in no particular order of likelihood):-
1) I am going crazy
2) Allan is the innocent victim of a well meaning employee who has changed things after reading my original post
3) Allan is playing a very naughty game
I have a sneaking suspicion only two people know the truth of this, so you'll have to trust me.
Cheers,
Charlie.
P.S. I am beginning to realise why certain people post a disclaimer saying that a post represents the opinions of the poster at a particular moment in time (and these opinions may change)...
I just didn't expect things to be so out of date so soon. _________________ "Before I speak, I have something important to say."

I think all three possibilities that you suggest are wrong and that the answer is a fourth possibility that you haven't thought of.
I doubt if you're going crazy, no employee touches the redirects on AssociatePrograms.com, and I don't have the energy to be naughty. _________________ Allan Gardyne

The trouble was, my sixty minutes were up...
Very mysterious.
Cheers,
Charlie.

It's the thought that counts. _________________ "Before I speak, I have something important to say."
