Post subject: Getting my Forum Indexed by Google
|
|
|
I run a forum on my site at http://romancestuck.com/phpBB2/index.php, which has Google PageRank. However, if you go to any of the interior pages such as http://romancestuck.com/phpBB2/viewforum.php?f=15, there is no PageRank. A couple of months ago, I went through the steps that I felt were needed to make sure that Google could index the forum. Unfortunately, Google does not seem able to index it. I would appreciate any suggestions on how to get this forum indexed by Google.
Thanks!

Check out Allan's threads here:

He explains the process he went through to make this forum indexable and it works ... last count from Google:
Results 1 - 10 of about 72,800 from associateprograms.com

It looks like Google actually has indexed the forum, but no PageRank is being transferred from the main forum page to the inner forum pages. I think this is because of the ? within the inner page urls. Anybody know how I can change the link to not contain a ? and still have the forum work right. I am using phpBB to run my forum.
Thanks!

Ben,
PR does not show up instanteously on new pages, and it is believed that Google is updating it only every quarter now. Google is constantly updating their internal measure of PR, but the PR in the toolbar is what has a delayed updating schedule.
So, that would put the last update around October of 2004. This is the last time I noticed any PR updates.
There are ways to get rid of ? in the URLS, but it requires knowledge of some server side rewrite rules. _________________ Robert

A couple of friends and I run a programming website. We recently switched to phpBB for the forums... using the latest stable release.
Google spiders the forums with no extra's needed. We did make a few tweaks to help the spiders, but it was being spidered already. _________________ Eric D. Burdo

Ben, here's a long discussion which started before we did the mod_rewrite on this forum. It includes several useful links to articles describing how to do mod_rewrites:

Thanks Allan,
Unfortunately, I still can't seem to find simple step by step instructions on what phpBB files to change and what to put in my .htaccess file. Previously, I had modified my phpBB files to remove the session id but PageRank still won't funnel into the forum pages from the main forum page. The only difference I can tell from my forum urls and yours (besides that yours have PageRank) is that mine contains a ? mark. I thought Google was capable of transferring PageRank to page urls that contain only one url variable, but apparently not.
If anyone could give me simple step by step instructions on how to get rid of the ? mark in my urls without breaking my forum, it would be greatly appreciated. I am using phpBB 2.0.10.
Thanks!

Thanks dcristo!
I had been leery to try that mod because it said that it contained some untested modications, but I gave it a try and it looks like it is working great!
Thanks!

No problems Ben.
I suggested it as I applied the same mod to my forum with success.
The mod works great, the only small problem with it, is when individual threads exceed the 15 posts (or whatever no. you set) for a page, the additional pages contain URL parameters. It's not a big deal really. |

In my .htaccess file, I had to remove the DirectoryIndex index.php line because it caused my main site page, index.html, to not come up and showed directory and file names instead. The mod still seems to work fine as far as I can tell.
Thanks!
