Good Day,

Not sure if this would be the correct forum to post this in but this can relate to SEO in a way. The following article states that 46% of people still judge a site by the design. Not good for all us content guys. Its a very interesting study and would like some feedback.

My personal opinion is a site still can look good and be good for SEO. I know i have read a lot about its all content and dont worry about how the site looks but before i started studying internet marketing, i would judge the site more by the design that the content. If the design was lacking, I usually left unless the site was referred by someone.

My other question to people who dont really think you need to have nothing than a simple basic design is....how much would your CR go up if you added to the design? I have yet to see a study on this.

Heres the article

What do they consider a well designed site? To me, something well designed is a site that works in all current browsers, has an easy-to-read layout and color scheme, and doesn't annoy me when I try to navigate it.

Many of the content sites I visit fit this category. It is typically only the newbies who make a site that I feel isn't well designed.

So I don't think the "well designed" concept really hurts us "content guys". Anyone else?

A good template ALWAYS goes a long way.

Humans are very superficial. If something LOOKS more professional, they'll be more likely to check out the content more.

I aint read the article, but as far as looks go. I like going to sites like this one. Where you click, it takes you too; it?s not full of banners, and it doesn?t annoy you. I like simple but effective sites.

Sites with tons of flash etc actually get on my nerves.

Most people I know seek information, not a brilliant looking site.

I am with Robert on this one, a good template goes along way, but it?s not that big a deal for me. Id be happy to go to a site with just the info and a white background. As long as it gives me the info I am after.

I know many of my friends are like this too, and I have hundreds who surf the net all day at uni, and in their jobs.

I have just made a site what consits of 3 simple tables. I aint getting any complaints about it, so thats good enough for me.

As far as cr. I presume you mean click throughs?

I have a php site with flash, the full works. Well ive kind of give it away now, but anyways, the ctrs on that were actually terrible. The design in terms of looks, was way above most my sites from a technical view.

Simple works way better for me. I dont know about others on here, maybe they will share some thoughts on this.

I don't claim to be an expert on design but I know one useful thing from experience.

If you build a VERY simple page and place AdSense links high on the page, it's possible to achieve some very pleasing click-through rates.

When there are few - or no - distractions, people are much more likely to read the AdSense ads and click on them.

I agree that designs should be clean, crisp and simple. But at the same time, many people searching online are not like us. Thats what this study was trying to say.

Many people still will judge a site by first over all appearance. Now if your main aim is to get them to click on an affiliate link or google adsense, then the overall design isnt going to be as much a factor.

But if you are trying to get them to become a repeat visitor, customer, email subscriber, then design does have to play a role. We all know the importance of raising our CR by even 1% of what that can do for our profits so has anyone ever tested on improving or changing their design and how it affected their numbers. We have been taught to test everything but i have yet to hear about testing improving design.

And from what i can remember from that article, it wasnt so much having all the bells and whistles of a "fancy" site but just a nice good professional appearance.

And easy navigation was also listed as important, which we all already know Smile and my one pet peeve on a site...is the "clutter" look, where they have soo much information in place you cant stand to be there.
