Post subject: A couple of cool website tools...
|
|
|
I found a new system for building websites that I have fallen in love with. It doesn't have all the cool tools the SBI does, but it does make site building easier than using static pages.
Here are the two tools I used:
1) I use TextPattern - a free content management system from http://www.textpattern.com/ - It handles all the serving up of content, including clean URL's.
2) I found a sample layout from Open Source Web Development - http://www.oswd.org - Be sure to use the XHTML and CSS samples (easiest to find via the advanced search functions).
After installing TXP (TextPattern), grab a template from OSWD, take about 20 minutes to fit it to TXP, and then start producing your content.
The CMS handles all the "behind-the-scenes" stuff for you... There is even a nie handle content formatter. So you can use a system called Textile (frequently used on many blogs) to put in headers, bold, italics, links and such.
And AdSense works great with this CMS. For examples, you can follow the Brick Labs and Crafts At Home links below. The only (currently) money-earners there are AdSense, so I ask that you refrain from clicking them. _________________ Eric D. Burdo

Thanks for the links, Eric. Textpattern looks quite amazing. I'm not very handy yet with anything beyond basic html , so the whole upload to my server thing is a little bit of an obstacle, but it looks like I'll be working with Wordpress soon, and I suspect once I get that far, working with Textpattern will be easy, too.
The open source design link is a great link, too. I've been searching for template sites, and I'm surprised this is the first time I've come across this one.
Thanks! _________________ Build Websites Quickly and Easily:

The only caveat with the OSWD site, is that not all their templates are XHTML/CSS compliant. And not only are those a bit easier to modify, they are the current "wave of the future". And they validate, which means less headaches amongst other browsers...
TextPattern is very nice. It takes the ease of WordPress (which is mostly for blogging) and adds in the power of building your own site... TextPattern has a very helpful forum, and there are some very nice TXP templates in the "layout and CSS discussion" forum there...
http://forum.textpattenr.com/ is the link to the forums for TXP. _________________ Eric D. Burdo

I've been having a nose around, and I like quite a few...
The only thing that concerns me, is that many are very complicated. Well, they are compared to the ones I do!
I needed something a bit more "business like" for a niche I am moving into (not consumer related) and I've found some excellent examples that I can easily simplify.
For anyone with a bit of HTML/CSS know how, there's some great stuff here.
Just my opinion,
Charlie. _________________ "Before I speak, I have something important to say."

The rules for submitting to OSWD are pretty open, so some sites may make a cool blog/game site (if you like the dark, illegal software look), many are not worth dealing with for affiliate sites.
But there are some nice ones... I applied on to my wifes site ( http://www.crafts-at-home.com ) and it only took about 20 minutes of tweaking to fit it to the way she wanted it to look. And most of that was TXP tweaks, and not the layout itself. _________________ Eric D. Burdo

Hey Eric.
Thanks for sharing, I have just setup a website yesterday with text pattern and it look great. I modified a template that I found on the net. I will see how the website performs and probably make more of these types of sites in the future. If anyone wants to see the site, just pm me
Thanks again.
