Dear Friends,
Even if you don't know me, you are my friends, because I read the advice you give on this forum, and I think only friends could do that.
My name is Anca Dumitru and I work as a freelance translator (which means the workflow isn't steady). I always wanted to have a site (and earn money from it Wink, but even if I know a lot about different things, I don't consider myself as having any special knowledge. That's why being an affiliate seems to me like a good idea.
In the end I bought a book about existing niches and chose a subject I could talk about. I'd like to present you my site and ask for an opinion. It is called www.greek-gods-and-goddesses.com (as greek-gods and greek-mythology were taken!). For the time being there are only a few pages (11). I have thought of making it as a kind of mythological dictionary. I've made it with Site Build It!, which makes work quite easy. In the book I've got my inspiration from, I found the sites art.com and allposters.com, which sell art reproduction. So the idea was to become an affiliate, and make a page about each god, with paintings representing that god. (And, hopefully, people who look for info on that god might just decide to buy a poster with that god). For the time being, the site reached an average of 12 visitors a day, but very few of them click on the posters to go to the 2 art sites (and nobody has bought anything, yet).
I have also affiliated with amazon, so at the end of the page I should add a link to a book about that specific topic.
The book also suggested to affiliate with a travel site and suggest places to visit. That travel site was only to Greece, but I'm thinking of finding trips to Italy too, as my site will deal with Roman gods too (and some of the characters in Greek mythology also founded cities in ancient Italy)

The problem is: are there other ways to monetize, besides those above?

Another question: I'd like my site to contain ancient paintings, vases, statues etc., representing the greek gods. This kind of images can be found on the Internet, but how about the copyright? Should I contact the owners and ask for permission? Of course, I wouldn't contact other mythology sites, as they represent "the competition".
There are also sites that sell reproductions of ancient vases and sculptures. Do you think it's a good idea to contact them and ask for permission to use their photos, and add a link "courtesy of? (name of the site)"? They don't have affiliate programs (unfortunately for me). But I could ask them to link back to my site (something like "if you want to know the story of the greek gods, click here") and so improve my ranking ! (Of course, I don't know if they' accept, as for now I don't have many visitors? nor many pages.)

I see every month there are searches from whois.sc, so there are people who want to know who took this domain name, so maybe in the end it is a good idea? but I don't really know how to put it to good use Sad

Please let me know what do you think and if I'm going into the right direction. (By the way: how about the look of the site?)
Thank you very much and God bless you,
Anca

Hi Anca,

Interesting niche. I think that you are definitely on the right track. There are lots of different subjects that you could introduce that are related to Greek Gods & Goddesses such as 'Foods of the Gods' could introduce Greek food, Greek Islands could promote a travel affiliate as you mentioned. Write lots of content and include them as links in your articles. Your website could possibly be used as a resource and research tool for schools and colleges so keep that in mind too.

Your site looks great so keep adding lots of fresh keyword rich content. Just a couple of spelling errors on the home page namely - 'heroin' should be spelled with an 'e' at the end otherwise it is a class A drug! And 'mythology' is spelled incorrectly at the end of the page.

Keep up the good work!

Declan

Hi Anca, Welcome.

That's an interesting idea for a site. As you probably know, you have a lot of work ahead of you. You need many more pages to give the search engines plenty of opportunities to find you, and to give other sites a good reason to link to your site.

Foods for the gods? Nice idea. The travel idea is a good one, too.

To help you find ideas for more pages, use the SBI brainstorming tool and Wordtracker.

For example, I typed "roman" and "greek" into Wordtracker and came up
with 500 key phrases that people type into search engines. You could choose from them, and also try related searches.

You could try typing the name of every god and goddess into Wordtracker and see what comes up.

I tried Athena.

How about a travel article on Athens, with links to travel programs?

Did you know there's an Athena Expresso Coffee Machine - and about 20 people a day search for one?

People also search for athena swimwear, athena swords, and even "athena mp3". You could have a whole web site just on Athena!

How about Athena Onassis? They search for her, too.

Aphrodite ... aphrodisiacs ... you could have a whole section on that.

Aphrodite was the Goddess of Love, right? I don't know if you want to go there, but that sounds like a whole potential web site, too - and we haven't even started on Mars yet.

There's big demand for Sailor Mars - and mars candy.

It looks to me as though you could have an article on each of the gods and goddesses and then examples of the way the words are now in today's culture on popular products, with one page for each product.

That would give you lots of search engine fodder, and opportunities for affiliate programs.

You could also do research at AdWords and Overture to see which key phrases are likely to be profitable ones for use with AdSense.

If you want to use pictures from other sites, just write and ask for permission. Same with pictures in books.

Dear Declan, dear Allan,
Thank you so very much! I had thought (partially) of doing something similar to what Allan suggested, that is, at the end of the page about Mars, to say that there are also the Mars bars and films about Martians (Mars attacks). But I didn't know whether it would "dilute" the content or not.
I'll look further into your suggestions. I used wordtracker and overture suggestion tool only in order to see what keywords people use most and optimize the pages for that search term (for instance, the page on Ares is optimized for the expression "greek god ares" because there is a higher number of searches for that expression)... but I hadn't really thought of using it for brainstorming. What you suggest open a whole new horizon for me!
Heartfelt thanks and God bless you, and the thing we wish in Romania to our friends: Good health!

You'll do much better in the search engines if you stick to one topic per page.

For example, you could have a little mini-directory or mini-sitemap page which contains links to each of the Mars things you write about, leading to a page about Mars attacks, a page page about mars bars, etc.

You could another mini-sitemap for the Aphrodite links, and another one for the Athena things.

That way, the search engines will understand what you're optimizing each page for. Google AdSense will also understand, so you're much more likely to get relevant ads served on your pages.

I haven't tried creating a site that has a huge variety of topics, varying from godesses to travel to Mars bars to coffee machines, and more!

The search engines advise us to get links from relevant sites, ones in the same industry. On the other hand, we're often told that search engines rank pages, not sites.

So it will be very interesting to see how this works out for you.

I hope you'll report back here.

Good luck!

Dear Alan,
thank you for your answer, I'll try to do things this way, it looks like a wonderful idea (maybe after I have added more pages directly connected to the Greek myhtology theme). And yes, I'll be back to tell you what worked and how things go.
Thank you again and let me just tell you that now I don't feel alone any more (no one around me really thinks that this idea of having a site might work and, in the end, even produce money).
I'll try twisting the pages a little, that is: the initial idea was to have a page about the god, then 2 images, then a link to another page with just images of that specific god. Now I have thought of putting the images inside the text, that is: the text is about the birth of Venus, then I put Botticelli's painting with the Birth of Venus, then there is text about her love affair with Mars - the painting with Mars, then the story about the judgement of Paris and a painting on this subject (of course, not too many images, I don't want the page to be "heavy").
Last, but not least, I'll study you Affiliate tutorial (just found it yesterday)!
Thank you again and God bless,
Anca
