I once read an article about a newsletter publisher who offers a paid subscription. I am sorry I have no link any more. Anyway... when he started to think about the price for the subscription he chose, let's say 15$ per month. Then he decided to let his readers set the price and he ended up with 21$ per subscriber.
He earned several thousend of dollars more per year.
I am really sorry I can't remember the newsletter's name...

I agree with you. I also don't like asking for donations from my visitors. Asking for donations would probably make my visitors think that I am not doing all that well on the Web and therefore are begging for money from my visitors.

What we did was to add a new feature to the classifieds where users would pledge to pay us $15 if they were happy with the performance of their ad. This is, in effect, a donation without calling it that. They are under no obligation, and it is entirely based on their perception of the performance of their classified.
I'm sure you could come up with a similar pledge from your users. Give them something of value (maybe something you already give away for free), and ask them to pay if they are satisfied/happy/make money or whatever the goal of this give away is.
Without knowing more about your site, I can't come up with any kind of specific advice. But if you can give them something in exchange for their donation, I think it will make your site more professional. |

Donations can be pretty cool. One benefit is that you don't have to show them the value of a product, and give them something in return. You can just ask for money - you'd be surprised how well it works.
That said, if you run an internet marketing site it probably won't go down well. However, for any non-commercial website (ie. content sites that make money through Adsense and affiliate programs) it would probably work quite well.
I think the key is testing though.

If you do a google search on "cyber begging" you will come up with some interesting stories on people asking for donations on their sites. It appears that this can be an effective way of earning income.
Have you heard or read stories about street corner beggers making a good living with their "Will work for food" signs. Appently this also works on the internet.....whether you like it or not. _________________ Bob |

Most of my sites do not sell anything, so the only way to generate income is through affiliate links. I have thought about adding a little link to allow people to donate, but for some reason, it just doesn't feel right. I don't think there is anything wrong with soliciting donations if you have no other way of paying the cost of running your site. But you should do it unobtrusively so as not to make visitors uneasy. As a visitor, if I find a site with lots of valuable information, I would look for the donation link...it does not have to look for me. _________________ Increase Website Traffic | Free URL Submission | Link Directory | Free Articles | Free Classifieds |
