Post subject: Some advice about adding AdSense
|
|
|
Hello all,
I just thought I'd share this little gem with you to save any of you going through what I'm going through right now! I've already mentioned this in another post in a different forum, but I think it's appropriate to bring it up here, afresh.
Last week I added AdSense to my fledgling site - which only gets 30 or so visitors per day, but it's a start. Everything seemed fine at first - and as a newbie, I was pleased.
However, a few days after adding AdSense, my rankings fell hundreds of places at Google, my visitors stopped, and it took me a while to work out what happened. I don't think it has anything to do with AdSense itself - more a lack of CommonSense(tm).
In order to make room for AdSense, I deleted a few small paragraphs from my right hand column so I could slot in the skyscraper, and didn't think anything of it. Until the Google Freshbot came along...
It seems Google had a soft spot for a couple of keywords I had in those little paragraphs, and marked me down severely as a result of removing them. I can't think of anything else that could have caused this, if it's true that AdSense itself has no impact on rankings. My PageRank is still the same, I don't appear to have any penalties ('cause I haven't done anything wrong), but I'm suddenly off the scale at the bottom end!
Bwwaaaahhh haaaahh!!
I've increased my keyword density back to what it was in the hope that Google will put me back up again when the Freshbot's next visit gets indexed in a few days, but I'm not too hopeful!
For the time being, the only things passing through my site apart from tumbleweed are bots like Scooter, WISENut, Inktomi Slurp, etc.
Lesson: be careful not to muck up your page when you add AdSense!

Thought I'd give everyone a bit of an update here.
I tried tweaking my keywords to try to fix what I broke, and as I expected, saw my position improve on Google again within a couple of days. However, the improvement only lasted a day, then I was back down in the depths of the search results once more.
Puzzled, I tweaked my keywords again, and the same thing happened. I was briefly back on page one for a day, then the next day, I'm back down on page five again.
Now I'm really confused.
I'm a bit worried about what's happening, so I'm going to try regressing my site back to the pre-AdSense version, to see if my position stabilizes.
Has anyone else had any trouble like this?

Bri ... leave your site alone!!!
When Google does its constant updating new sites bounce a lot! Give it some time to settle before you go tweaking again otherwise you won't know what is actually working and what isn't.
Allow several weeks at least before you make more changes. I know ... sometimes it's hard to leave it alone ... but your last change could really mess you up and you won't know it until it's too late.

Thanks for the tip, Debs. I guess I was panicking.
I'm also a techie, so it's tough resisting the temptation to tinker and tweak when something isn't quite right. I'll leave my site alone for a month or so and see what happens.
Have you seen this weird behaviour with Google before? For a newbie, it's a pretty nasty experience.

Yes, this happens all the time. Debs advice is excellent. My only comment is that I would not be quite that patient -- 2 weeks is my absolute limit.

Thanks Audri.
I'll give it at least two weeks, then I'll review things and see how it's going.
In the meantime, I'll try to focus on link building, and possibly adding more content - even though there are 100+ pages already, and I'm starting to run out of things to say!

Bri,
If you are running out of things to say ... research another topic for a new site?
That's what I do in between times
Thanks Audri for suggesting two weeks ... I think that's excellent ... I wasn't sure how long to allow it to sit myself.

How about a related niche? Maybe in due course you could have an umbrella site linking to each of the related niches.
Just a thought,

Thanks Debs & Charlie.
I am actually working on another project.
I knew I probably wouldn't be able to make a living from the one site, so as soon as it was nearing 'completion', I started scraping around to see what I could do next.
Plus - I don't want to put all my eggs in one basket. Been there, done that!
