Fascinating. I must run similar experiment with my soon-to-be-launched site. That will be a nice clean table without any links etc. I will tell you my numbers in... future.

Are you saying the MAIN reason for your favourable Alexa results is having your site as your default homepage? _________________ Adsense Help Blog |

I think it's fairly accurate if you get in the top 10,000, not the top 100,000.
I don't have it installed on my computer. _________________ Allan Gardyne

Hi guys,
Allan, that narrows it significantly. I am just trying to figure out what's behind this mechanism...
My experiment page has been up for 20 hours now, and I have updated it, because there has been a large jump upwards in daily and 1wk Avg. since it was published. I have also added a poll to actually know if visitors have the toolbar installed. Will be interesting to know, and I will be publishing it when I have enough results in

edit:
Allan, come to think of it: If it is fairly accurate for the top 10.000, is it correct to say that it is fairly inaccurate for 16.5 million - 10.000 ? _________________ DatabaseDesigner

Maybe. I'm not an expert on Alexa.
If I want stats, I believe in looking at my own traffic stats. As far as I'm concerned they're the stats that matter.
And I'm much more interested in sales figures than traffic stats.
And even more interesting are checks actually received and banked! _________________ Allan Gardyne

Dear Alf,
I also have similar experience. I had installed Alexa toolbar at home and office. I used to check the alexa ranking regularly when I started website in Oct 2003. In March 2004, my rank was approx. 149000. Then I removed the alexa toolbar and my rank dropped to 253000. I am sure about this process. If you install alexa and visit your site, you will move up in alexa ranking. That's why I removed it.
Alf, appreciate your analytical mind. I used your "Add to Favorites" script.
Thanks for the script.
with best regards

Haven't you ever heard the saying...
"Alexa is vanity, profit is sanity".
Thought you had.
Cheers,

I have never used Alexa to measure my own traffic. I have been using it to study my competition. For me it has been some kind of light-weight tool to position competing sites, according their presumed traffic. Guess I will not use it for that anymore.
I have also started to question the relevancy of those sites that Alexa shows as relevant links. Just a quick example (no scientific research here, just impressions and memories):
I recently read a book called Jennifer Government, I liked it so I checked some more information from the web. The first site I ended up with was an online game, based on the book. Game can be seen here www.nationstates.net
As related links, Alexa suggested sites like - these I use myself - google, phpBB, blogger, movable type and imdb. Sites like fark, homestarrunner, penny arcade and quizilla, I do not follow. I did not get any mention about maxbarry.com (author of the book) but as I visited his blog for couple of times, the Alexa suggestion link was there to recommend maxbarry.
I decided to start publishing my website as I write pages. I bet there is not other traffic to my site except my personal visits. In this case, it is almost like a game for me to see what Alexa will judge the related links for my site to be. After this try, I guess that I will just uninstall Alexa toolbar and stop using it as a tool to evaluate the competition. It is too easy to distort the numbers by ones own behaviour, especially on niche markets.
Databasedesigner, it has been fun to follow your experiments with Alexa. |
