Thanks

Hello James.

Just off the top of my head, here's a few reasons...

1. You've very little to lose (in $ at least), if you pay commissions on sales. You'll have a (potentially) huge team promoting you, for minimal investment.

2. Faster brand awareness and deeper market penetration.

3. 50% (say) of a $1m pie might be a lot better than 100% of a $10k pie, if you see what I mean! Wink

The only downside to this, is the amount of time you will need to dedicate to "hand holding" and affiliate support. It might be worth hiring an affiliate manager (even if part time, or freelance), if you think the scale will warrant it. Also do remember that the number of affiliates who actually make any real sales will be small (especially if you're recruiting from the public, rather than businesses.)

For these reasons, unless you think your affiliates are also potentially your future customers (as with "internet marketing" or gambling, for example), you might consider forming joint ventures (paying commissions on sales in a similar way) with major players in your market. You might not get quite the same amount of exposure, but if you reach the right players, I bet you'll get a large chunk of the market for minimal administrative hassle.

I'm assuming also that you have enough net profit to offer an attractive commission to affiliates, and that your product can feasibly be sold online.

Whole books have been written on this, and I know Allan G has articles on his site on the subject, but this is my view of the pros and cons.

Hope this helps,
Charlie.

The forum is being indexed. So your links should count soon. Lets see.

Just to clarify... I read recently that although Google still indexes forums and follows links, they no longer count them for link popularity. Does anyone have any evidence of this?

Cheers,
Charlie.

I've recently read two conflicting opinions on this: (a) that forum links are no longer counted, and (b) that Google counts ALL links it finds, it just doesn't display them all as backward links when you click on "Backward Links" in the Google toolbar. I tend to believe the guy who says Google counts ALL links for link popularity. Anyone have proof one way or the other?

There's so much misinformation out there... I'd love to see some actual evidence, too.

One things I do know... Google spiders this site almost every day, perhaps every day. (I use a script which shows me when visitors try to access a file that doesn't exist, so I know when Google tries to find robots.txt.)

The script was created by Adrian Ling, a really nice, helpful guy.

It was also very handy when we switched the AssociatePrograms.com database to a new web host a few months ago, enabling me to quickly identity faulty links.

I wrote about it here:

"Awesome 404 script fixes problems on your site"
http://www.AssociatePrograms.com/search/newsletter208.shtml

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the reminder, Allan...

I know Neil Shearing (amongst others) is a fan of Adrian's, too.

Cheers,
Charlie.

Hi,
As for backlink display, google displays backlinks only from sites with Pagerank>3 only. As far as i know, other links do count as backward links and in pagerank calculation, but are not displayed with the link:site.com search.

Charlie, where did you read about google not counting backlinks from forums ? Just wanted to know. I have not come across this information.

To your success,
Gana.

Planet Ocean's recent monthly update.

They usually don't jump in with both feet, but as Allan pointed out, the jury's still out on this one.

All the best,
Charlie.

Creating an affiliate program is the best way to generate free advertising for the life of your product. What could be better than hundreds or thousands of people promoting your product?!

If you're not into "internet marketing" (where your affiliates can easily be "mistaken" for potential customers), maybe a small number of super(ish) affiliates who sell 90-odd % as much, but require minimal support.

Just a thought,
Charlie.
