In the scheme of things I know he lost good income because of this, but with the sheer number of sites he has it was a small loss overall financially.

And THAT'S the benefit of multiple sites as opposed to only a handful. _________________ Robert

It's a shame he had to lose that much from an error but it is a valuable lesson to everyone - it really drills home the point not to crosslink and to be very careful in this regard.
Do you guys think that one way links could pose a danger? Say you have ten sites. You make a new site, the 11th. You want to introduce it to google. So you link to it from say two of your sites - a one way link from one or two of your own sites to your new site. Do you guys think that there could be a problem with this? Especially as you up the number of your sites with the one way link? Personally, I keep it just to one site and then I off the link once it makes google. |

It might not cause a direct problem, but it leads room for other mistakes. For example, say one of your sites trades links with another site not owned by you. Then for whatever reason, the site owned by the other person is assigned a 0 PR penalty.
Unless you can catch this soon, because you link to this "bad neighborhood" that has been penalized by Google, then the 0 PR penalty can propogate to your site. Then say I link to this site of mine from 20 other sites of my own. Well, now that my site has been assigned a 0 PR penalty, my 20 sites linking into that site could suffer the same problem.
Can you see the propogation of a penalty across a network, even though there isn't crosslinking? I personally think this was part of why James was hit so bad, it started with a site or two and spread.

I actually do the same thing, to introduce my new sites to Google. No problems from my end with it, and as long as it's temporary it shouldn't pose much of a threat. _________________ Robert

If you are worried you can introduct your new site by linking to it from some other site, like a directory site or an article site or a forum post. Google will find it that way and it doesn't connect to your other sites. |

| I've noticed that on one of James sites he has an image on it that is being called from another of his sites. Seems unusual, I don't see it on other pages of the site. Perhaps its an error? Or maybe it is done on purpose or doesnt really matter? I haven't really looked at it in depth but maybe its possibly contributing to some crosslinking related problems? |

a couple of posts above, robertb mentioned the "penalty" of a PR 0. Is that a firm rule - never link to another page with a PR of 0 ? That seems a bit too rigid given that PR is not always valid.

John,
All new sites have a PR of 0, so it is quite alright to link to those. But a site that has had any PR before, and then receives a 0 PR, is PROBABLY suffering from a penalty.
Another was to ascertain this is to see if their site is still showing up in the Google index. _________________ Robert

Thanks robertb.. I can sigh a bit of relief now since I've linked with a few of those PR zero sites. Im still wondering about the idea of having your own PR diluted by those. Anythought ?

Your PR doesn't get diluted by linking to PR0 sites any more than it does by linking to PR8 sites.
It's the total number of links on the page that "dilute" your PR ... if you have 20 internal links and 20 outgoing links, 50% of your PR available to pass is sent offsite. If you have 30 internal links and 10 outgoing links on a page, then only 25% of your PR available to pass is sent offsite, thereby retaining more to flow within your site.
