If you're looking for new revenue streams for your site, you'll find this article on Craigslist.org fascinating.

http://money.cnn.com/2004/08/05/technology/techinvestor/hellweg/index.htm

The site that "has never seemed to have much of a business model" has the potential to make nearly $100 million a year, according to this writer.

And that's without affiliate programs or AdSense!

Allan,

Great article. I know there was an offer recently to purchase craiglists and the answer was No.

Here's a quick look back at Fast Company's article in 2000 on craiglists.

Back then it was Community, Community...
http://www.fastcompany.com/magazine/nc02/026.html

As I've suggested many times on AP, adding or starting Community/Network Businesses is a good way to Earn More. Wink

Many big and small names are doing it using various methods, and trends show that there are some huge opportunities.

Here's a mix of Community type stuff and some resources.

Very good article!

I've been planing for some time, to launch a community type website. Sort of a Fark.com/DrudgeReport/Craiglist hybrid. If that makes sense Laughing

I'm not launching until my current site has reached 30k members. Then to launch, I will offer my current site members "points" which they can redeem at the current site for rewards, in return for joining the new site.

I figure this should kick it off pretty well before I start the regular advertising Very Happy

Craigslist is a definitely a great engine but how can affiliates make $ from this site. I know many of the posting are free but lets say if you have a product to sell. How do effectively advertise and track the sale. Can you actually put in the url with your affiliate code?

Hi Peter, When I wrote about Craigslist what I had in mind was that affiliates might be interested in looking at a site that generates a lot of income WITHOUT using affiliate programs.

I like to keep my mind open to other income opportunities.

Het don't forget to add Classifieds as a community builder add on! While we're not Craigslist level, we do (IMNSHO) havea great service that allows anyone to have their own co-branded classifieds for free. Of course if you need a more customized solution we have that too...

Oh got it. Thanks Allan!

Besides craigslist, what are some of the major classified sites out there that affiliates should post too? Out in in California, people can try recycler.com and I think pennysaver.

I hope craigslist sticks to there business model and services..but I think they will definitely change in some sort of fashion (i.e. layout, services, and fees) ....because everyone needs to change some times Smile

Well, there's our site, EP.com!

Others:
classifieds.yahoo.com
bestads.com
traderonline.com
inetgiant.com
citynews.com
sell.com
adpost.com
bestads.com
adlandpro.com

Some sites are better for certain products or services. Some are free and have a ton of "junk" so nobody read the ads, but they are free...

Is anyone here making money posting affiliate links on such sites?

I thought that tactic went out of fashion years ago.

Craigslist will start changing fast!!! Recently, ebay purchased part of them and the two systems will be somewhat integrated. Also, they are now one of the main features for RSS feeds on Yahoo's new My Yahoo page. It is only a matter of time before they go public... I give them 2-3 years max.

Craigslist is a concept that works: they offer the possibility for nearly everyone to place an ad on their site for free. They know people are not really willing to pay for services so they let the companies pay. Businesses are more willing to pay.

Craigslist is a kind of ideavirus. However I don't like the interface on the main page.

Here's an article indicating craigslist is costing newspapers millions $ in advertising revenue - http://news.com.com/Report+Craigslist+costing+newspapers+millions/2100-1024_3-5505076.html
