Post subject: angel needs reviewing....

hi ive been suggested by debs (thank you) that maybe this thread could help. i know little bit about HTML but zero ideas about affiliates and web promotion ok here goes nothing...
i (n' sister) have a website http://www.lowcarbangel.com that has just been registered and converted into an official website. actually the idea came out from our bookmarks collection and also just because i am a low carber myself (ive been on low carb message boards a lot and they contain too much long information that i have to read everything to get somethin so i thought my angel simplifies it all).
i have few questions...o well and dilemma too actually....
1) is our design ok...i dont want to create too fancy colors etc as it is only a directory..
2) are my meta-tags okay? we're bit depressed lol from not getting any traffic but hay someone's gotta learn right....i have submitted to only google and alta vista (since this is a free site and we spent virtually nothing on it so submitting to ppc will be a butt dragger.....)
2) i came up with this 'express lane' idea (for us low carbers to just shop only low carbs and exercise stuff instead of being bombarded on anything non-related to low carbs). since im just a web novice so i just used some ready-made script to make the pages work (i tried php script but it didnt work in frame)
if you see how the pages are constructed is that my sister setup a frameset pages to display her various merchants......kinda offering one click 'shops hopping' whereby our website page stay on top of the frame and merchant website displaying on the bottom frame....(see example)
http://www.lowcarbangel.com/Featured_Merchant/1800patch.asp
and when visitors click 'next shop' it will go to another merchant frame page with their website loads on bottom frame. we use some easy cut and paste remote random link script for her visitors to navigate from one store to one store.
and there comes me. what i did was i signed up for whatever merchants she got and setup my affiliate IDs to show up in her 'content' frame (bottom frame).
SO NOW MY DILEMMA IS...
since the visitors will not click on my affiliate ID directly but the main frame page my sister created (1800patch.asp whatever), will my affiliate IDs counts? or will it just be a waste of time?
i mean since the visitor is not clickin on my affiliate ID but they got redirected to merchant page from my affiliate ID embedded in the 'content' frame.
visitors click on mainframe page thus load my affiliate IDs in 'content' frame from bringing merchant page to show and visitors can start shop.
will this method do me any good? will the merchant(s) tracking tracks this type of linking?
OK i think that's all from now. feel free to comment about our site. it's not much there but i feel happy to be able to help people that are low carbing like me. honestly, do you think i can make money from this site? even though that's not my prime intention. i did join some affiliate programs just to benefit from it but i havent put any work to it (yet) cuz i dont know how.
sorry for the rants lol. looking forward to learn! _________________ http://www.lowcarbangel.com

The first problem I had with your site, and maybe it is supposed to do this is ... when I click a category, go to the category and get a list, then click an item in a list, I just get sent to more category pages. No matter how many times I click a link in the lists that appear, I never leave your site and don't get much information either. I think visitors would become confused by this and move on to another site. People expect to click a link and either see a product, or get good information on it. I used IE 6 and Netscape 7 to view your site, happened with both. Your "Merchandise" link at the bottom of the page led to CafePress, but that's the only shopping link I could get to work.
I am not familiar with frames so I can't give any advise except ... when framing merchant sites be sure you do it properly and within their guidelines. Some merchants don't allow framing as it messes up the tracking and shopping cart security. If using frames you should use the <no frames> tag so SE's can find the right pages for indexing.
In viewing your pages, I understand your desire to build a directory, but honestly, it doesn't say anything ... just a long list of links, and when you click an item, all you see is one sentence about the item. Hardly enough to help me make a decision about what I want or where I want to go.
You have an Article Archive, but no articles. Articles would be a great way to draw the SE's to your site, and visitors, and should be more prominently placed. Maybe add a "new" articles section on your home page? I think you would get better results with your site if you used Articles as your main directory with a selection of related items at the end of your articles.
Your design is nice, clean and easy to follow. Checking your source code on a variety of pages, quite a few ... particularly in the directory categories and listings ... have no meta tags or title tags but your template design allows for them. The title tag is extremely important as this is what is shown in the SERPS and what visitors will click on to get to your site. The description tag is important to some SE's ... some will show it, some will use other descriptors of your page. The keywords tag isn't as important as the prior two, but should still be used for those SE's that want it.
I am not sure what you mean by "pocket guide" When I think of a pocket guide, it is something I can carry with me for quick reference and if that is a keyphrase you are targeting, your visitors may be looking to purchase a small book to keep on hand.
If you want to rank well in the SE's, you need content they can index, proper title and meta tags, and incoming links to your site. Work on these areas and you should see some improvement over time.

Sarah and other Newbies,
Might I remind you that in the Message Board Use Instructions you are advised to spend some time browsing all the forums of interest to get a background knowledge of Affiliate Programs and how they work and maybe find the answer to your question already there. At times, I see rather basic questions that are unexpected if one does even a little homework in this area.
I ask you to be kind to all those who volunteer their detailed responses by meeting them halfway - research your query first by using the search feature at the top of the page - it will save duplication of information.
Meanwhile, the information available is increasing almost exponentially!! Avail yourselves of it first before asking your questions.

Hi Wally, Debs
Thanks for the response. I apologize I didn't mean to force or to get the straight answers (without doing prior research which is true I didn't yet on this site), however I've done immese amount of queries from google about the dilemma re: the frame but didn't seem to find any answers (wrong place huh). I have read the the board instruction and I thought maybe I should just post straight forward to see what others think and Debs has given me some ideas. I thank you guys so much 4 the response I really appreciate it.

Oh yes actually my bf complaints the same thing it's just that the ASP directory script I'm using have 3 layers MAIN > CATEGORY > LISTING > DETAILS > MERCHANT REAL WEBSITE.......it is lot of layers there but I don't know how to modify the script to make the usability easier (it's free script!).

Yes you're right about the description being short! It was just the 3 of us working on it on extra time (I spent the most though) and to get all links we gather up quickly, we just pinched the website titles or summarize the whole thing into one simple straight to the point information on what one link / website is doing. I think I should put more write-ups. I just thought that some visitors might like it short and sweet instead of too much description but too short won't give them any information either so I should expand on that one. Will work on the description slowly......I think I should maybe explain on how to use the directory.....
Re: Merchandise yes we use cafe press......

Hmm sounds like to me it won't work....but I just thought by framing them it'd be just easier to navigate instead of opening new windows. Hmmmm.....maybe I have to forget the idea.....

Yes havent put up any...oh actually I did but....couple or 3 of them but i think the database got deleted accidentally....but I do have copies in my hard drive.

Meaning my front page is articles instead of the whole directory thing?

I n sister had bit of argument on this one too ....its just we dont know what to name our site...I just thought that 'pocket' means something short and sweet....but then again you're right about carryin it around....hmmm....
