Hello Board Members.

This is my first post and I'm glad to participate.

BTW, Get Well Soon Allan.

I recently had actual correspondence with the folks at Google, and it wasn't good. To make a long story short, I'll just share the 2 letters... mine to them and their response:

I'm wondering why, on the Addiction / Recovery pages on my website I all of a sudden display "Donate to Charity", "National PTA" and other non paying advertisers.

These pages have been established since the beginning of the program and formerly displayed relevant ads.

Now for the past few days the ads have no relevancy to my pages.

The pages in question are:
http://www.higher-self-improvement-pursuits.com/drug-addiction.html

and all pages in that category.

Did I do something wrong?

And their response:

> Hello Joseph,

> deliver the most relevant ads to a web page. While this system works very
> well, there are a small number of pages where poorly targeted or

Mind you that these pages in no way advocate the use, distribution, etc., etc. of illicit drugs, drunkeness etc., in fact just the opposite.

I've been in "recovery" for over 7 years and proud to be clean and sober the entire time. These pages don't glorify nor condon behavior which advertisers would object to.

My guess is that "spider-bots" can't tell the difference and thus the action by the G-Men.

Now I'm not going to go and take a drink because of it... adsense still displays relevant ads on the rest of the site. But those were decent earners (as far as I can tell).

Just thought I'd share

Similar thing happened to some of my pages.

Google responded with an apology of sorts.

For those who are going to build content sites with the purpose of exclusively or primarily promoting Adsense, be careful with the topic that you pick.

I would avoid anything that has anything to do with *** because these are increasingly getting picked up by Google as porn-related, even if they are not.

For example, if you are a *** therapist and created a page on *** dysfunction, which is a very valid condition that some people may want assistance on, you won't have any luck with Google.

If there are no affiliate programs for what you plan on creating a site on, it's doubly important to make sure that you aren't doing a theme that could be interpreted by Google's inhuman bots as controversial in any way, shape, or form. Because you could end up creating an entire site on things that Google will only display charity ads.

That would be a lot of work down the drain!

By the way, when I said Google responded with an apology of sorts, they still were unable to do anything about it.

I had some pages that were displaying some very targeted ads on natural *** enhancement products (natural alternatives to viagra).

These pages were fine for over a month and then I noticed one day they were displaying charity ads that weren't going away.

When I emailed Google, that's when I got the apology.

It was obvious to the person who saw the pages that I wasn't promoting porn or anything of the sort. But, in the end, it's a program that determines what ads display on your site, not a human.

The response to you indicates they don't want ads to appear on pages that may be negative or offensive.

I'm seeing ads on blogs and other sites that strongly promote a particular political or cultural idealogy. Regardless of the positions of these sites, their stance on issues are obviously going to be "offensive" to anyone who doesn't share the opinions. See http://www.andrewsullivan.com as an example.

It's interesting that your site is considered to be potentially offensive and others are not.

It's also interesting that even after you point out the problem with the bot, the human doesn't override the bot somehow and put up relevant ads.

I suppose this proves what we already "knew": Google's system does not allow for manual overrides.

Not surprising really. Manual overrides on single case basis would require quite a lot of time and effort - time and effort better spent on tweaking the alorithms.
