Hello all! I'm designing my site using a three-column table method. What is the average width you design for? I was thinking around 700 or so pix? Any input would be appreciated!

I now design using 760 pixels for width. Used to let it stretch to fit the screen, but found that the content text would sometimes be too wide for comfortable reading. Also recently found, via Nielson's Useability newsletter, that research indicates most people don't surf with the screen fully open. They like to see their desktop to easily access other windows/programs,etc. that they may have open.

My stats indicate 800x600 is the "most used" resolution, with the next higher 1024x768 being next.

Thank you debs. I have researched the stretch-to-fit and I also agree that you lose too much of the design! I'm doing my best to design with "as little as needed" scrolling.

For static designs, try designing website templates for 744. IE on a mac gives you less horizontal browser space to work with. If you don't mind forcing mac users to side scroll, 760 is a good width to target the design for your web site.

I too design for 760px wide. Usually have a liquid design that stretches with a browser, this can cause things to look a bit stretched for users that browse fullscreen with high resolutions but for the vast majority it will look fine.

Does anyone still design for 640x480? Most of the new computers I have wont even go down that low.

Hi peeps,
Ive been strugling for over a week now, so ive decided to ask, When u start a brand new web page, how do u set out the tables/ template/layout of your page and get it to stop where u put it ?
Ive tried and tried and tried, and everytime nothing works, Ive placed some buttons down the left hand side using a web creating software, (copy n paste) and ive also made 4 boxes down the right hand side for future links,
now all i want to do is type stuff on the centre of the page between the 2 sets of boxes, without interfering with the boxes, but no matter what i do it pushes either the boxes out of alignment, or the Text itself writes over the top of the boxes.
Are there any tags that tell the text to stop and return back to where it started, or to make the boxes solid and stop text writing over them??
And why if i try and add a box in the center of the page between the other boxes does it just push them out of alignment , like it would rather sit on top of the other boxes rather than line up next to them ?

i use the align= left and align= right etc but i get no response apart from a seriously screwed up page and a headache Sad

What am i missing ?

Are there any special tags that make your tables/ boxes/ text move up or down on the page ??
The layout/templates/ structure of the page is the only thing thats slowing me down , i just have no idea how to layout the page and work with it, Ive even brought a disc with web templates on and i still cant figure out how they work and how u get them to align up, how to move them around etc etc
Is there a tutorial that explains this in depth ? or a software program that lets u just click and drag and make a page full of boxes where u want them ?

You don't say whether you used tables or div's to set your side boxes. But whichever way you went, it doesn't sound like you put in a center box for your text.

You need to set structure for the entire page, or set no structure at all, otherwise you will end up with a mess.

If you use tables, you need to set one table with 3 columns. If you use divs you need to set the left, center, and right columns separately.

I would suggest you find a free template (whichever structure you want - tables or divs) and then do the modification to it to achieve the look you want. You can search Google for free web templates and you will likely get table designed styles. Or you can search for free tableless web templates to get the <div> structured ones.

I was designing my own page, but spending way too much time. Since it's my first site I went ahead and got a free template which I am now modifying.

If you need help with tables there are tons of online resources. Though, I found the Barnes and Nobles "In easy Steps" books very helpful. They only cost $10 The HTML one explains tables and all. It's nice to have a hard copy to look at.

I'm using tables. Email me at melyatsko-yahoo-com if you would like!

I?m designing my site with a major table with the width of 85%. Inside are two columns, one of 70%(of table width) and the other of 30%. The text goes in the 70% column. It is easy to read even at a 1024X768 resolution. When the window is resized to less than 400 pixels it looks a little funny, but I don?t think that there are many people who view a page this way.

Eugen.

Microsoft is know defaulting Windows to 1024 by 768. About 48% of users view in this setting and that number will only grow with as the years go on. Most of other users use 800 by 600. I would design for 800 by 600.

I design for 800x600 and then center the whole page for the 1024 folks. It just looks too weird(to me) when people design for lower resolutions and then align to the left in 1024! Big, old, huge gap on the right side with white space.

Some pros are also using the space on the right in 800x600 that can't be seen to include ads and stuff that CAN be seen in 1024x768. Have to have exact measurements for that though. Kinda tricky for me...

As far as the tables going all crazy, I believe you need to set them to the exact size you want them to be, and then they'll stay put. Use the width=*** and the height=***, with *** being the size in pixels or percent. Check some tutorials for specifics in good old google! I use exact pixel sizes for more control, personally.

Also, always use the width and height tags in your images, as well! Browsers love that and can set the table up faster. So, your webpage is in front of the viewer quicker!

MiltonH

I try to keep the design under 760 pixels as well. The last two I did came in at 650, with some padding to keep the site from pushing up against the edge of the window. I do like the idea of centering the site for those with exceptionally wide browsers.

Remember that just because the stats show users have 1024 or whatever monitors does not mean that they have browsers set to this size. In fact, most people are used to windowing and they set the browser to a vertical rectangle format (taller than wide) as the monitors get larger. Also, browsers have features that may add a left column that rakes away space from the web page. Even if my browser window was a full 1280 pixels wide (which I never do), I have 200 pixels or so in the left sidebar.

Do not design by computer monotor stats, design for what most people will see and like. If you can't get some testing done, go to public places like libraries and Internet Cafes to see what people are doing and do your own market research!
