Post subject: How Many Sites?
|
|
|
Hello -
I am new to this and curious (I hope I am not asking anything too personal) - how many sites does a person need to have to support themself with affiliate marketing? I know it varies depending on how successful a particular site is, but I am interested in trying to get an idea of how many sites I will need.
Although I have identified about 10 niches to explore, my time is already consumed by my first site. I cannot, at this time, imagine managing ten sites.
Thank you,

The key as you said, is how well a site does. Roslind Gardner has several dating sites and made over $400,000 last year with affiliate programs. I could live on that
Another key, is how much do you need to support yourself?
My suggestion, is keep with the one site you have, get it as automated as possible so you only have to answer some emails, send a newsletter once or twice a month, and update it with a new article every couple of weeks. Once you reach that point, then you are ready to go to the next niche and do the same.
That doesn't mean you should wait until the money starts rolling in before you move to the next site, since search engines take their own sweet time about indexing. Do check your site stats weekly, and SE rankings, etc. in case you need to modify something.
My 2 cents,

Hi Shelly: The question is not necessarily how many websites, but building the one that hits a homerun. If you have not been to sitesell.com go there. It's the best program around.
God Bless you and your family.

And there is also the old quote "don't put all your eggs in one basket".
I would rather have 10 website producting $1000 per month (for a total of $10,000 per month, and $120,000 per year) than one website producing $10,000 per month.
Why? What happens if the affiliate program goes bust. Or if the market drops out. You just lost all your income if you go the 2nd route. if you went the first, you just lost $1000 a month. I could live with a $1000 a month loss of income until I had another site or two up to replace it... _________________ Eric D. Burdo

I agree with Eric about smaller income from multiple websites as opposed to one large income from one website.
This is a smart view to take IMO, however, I still think it's smart to finish one first, before you go on to the next.

Hello all.
Yes, I think it's a good idea, too...
I've fallen into the trap of starting too many things and finishing nothing in the past. Too many ideas, too little time. You know the sort of thing!
Another less tangible benefit of having several sites on several topics, is that it can help you think "out of the box", if you excuse the cliche. It's all too easy to get too narrow minded if you work on the same thing day in, day out.
Maybe having several different themes could even keep the interest factor high. Not everyone is as "driven" as they'd like to be. The last thing I want to do is lose hard-earned visitors because they detect my own boredom (however slight)! What's interesting today might not seem quite so interesting in six months, if you've lived it non-stop.
"Variety is the spice of life", as they say.
Cheers,
Charlie. |

Finishing one first... that's the hard part for me. Fortunately, my wife keeps me in line. :)
I have about 5 other niche site ideas, but I keep them on the back burner for now. www.thedropshipguide.com is my goal for the moment. My wife is working on: www.scrabooking-center.com (Her new SBI driven site, just started).
So yes, create one site, get it into the engines, then start on another, then finish that, then do another. _________________ Eric D. Burdo

Thanks very much for your comments. It helps so much to hear what other people are doing, especially when I've been staring at the computer for so long!

Focus is the key to online success. It only takes 1 really good site to make your dreams come true.

personality comes to play in it.
I prefer to compete on the snowboard slopes, not in business. I like to get in, take my cut, and remain unknown.
Debs mentioned "completing" a site. That, is subjective. Her site is damn near close to "expert" oriented. Wanna know about debt? Consult Debs. Heck, even Mvelopes has quoted (you do know that don't ya debs?). Well, they used some of her worksheets.
My deal is I don't want my businesses focussed on me. I don't want to be the online expert. I want business to be. I have my reasons as others do for being the "expert."
Therefore I just wanna clear a small amount per site and move along (I do attach email opt-ins in three key areas. All my sites feed into those. I outsource the writing of the newsletter).
When I first started, I wrote up a 10 page site and threw it up. It was profitable in 30 days from start to finish. I thought, "heck, I could do that again."
I did. Again and again and again.
The big rave these days is the huge content site. Yeah, great. However, I don't exhaust myself. I have well over 100 minisites now and they cover 100 different niche ideas. The ones that take off I develop into larger sites.
I can give ya a one page site that has a higher page rank then most marketers will ever see (World of ends.com). Point being that If you build smart and make the right contacts on the net then building a massive site "JUST" to get page rank goes out the door.
Now, I said all this not to debate what anyone else has said. Exact opposite.
I say it to make the point that HOW YOU WORK MATTERS. You have mentioned some key things and frustrations. LISTEN to them. WOrk within your own framework. If you want high touch and are in love with your niche than chase it.
I LOVE business, theory, profit models and want to be on the cover of Forbes. I chase that. I do things different because of it. It is one reason I CANT affort to become an expert and well known on marketing or snowboarding or bodybuilding. It would taint my goal.
So, I become an expert on business modeling on the net. I use it. I don't teach it. My reward will be the cover someday.
So, listen to you. And good luck to ya! |

If in doubt, I try not to agree with people (for the sake of it), but I'm in trouble here...
That's how I feel, too.
Though I'm no expert on Albanian-born missionaries, the one I have heard of - Mother Theresa - once said (words to the effect of)...
"Listen to what everyone says, smile... and then do it your own way."
I'm not quite sure I've got the smile bit right yet, but it's the thought that counts.
Cheers,
Charlie. _________________ "Before I speak, I have something important to say."

Charlie
I always picture you smiling. Even with a bit of sarcasm...
I wish I did not agree with all that. I tried learning other systems for years. Everything from Franklin Planners to Management Systems to blah blah.
I learned how I work. FOr good or ill I cut my own path but often combine the work of others to help make my own recipe. And it works for me. I guess it took me a while to be ok with who I am.
Charlie, for the record I appreciate you being the antagonist. It creats a different view and creates thinking. Makes me ask questions that lead to purified concepts. |

I'll have to get one of those webcam thingies and quash rumours like that once and for all...

"Antagonist"? I prefer "purifier"...
| Quote: | | It creates a different view and creates thinking. |
I think people come to forums for two reasons. To get specific answers from other people and to have other people help them answer their own questions. Maybe my posts appeal more to the second category...
In case you hadn't noticed, I like the questions that everyone knows don't have one right answer, but the ones I like best are those that other people think have one right answer, but I don't...
See what I mean about "purifier".
[Yes, a webcam. Definitely.]

[He said it first folks, whatever he means.]
Sounds dangerously like "reassures me that I was right all along" to me, but I'll give you the benefit of the doubt this time. And just when I thought the fan club was growing...
Why don't you post a bit more often, by the way?
Cheers,
Charlie.
P.S. I also like posts that make me change my mind half way through replying to them. _________________ "Before I speak, I have something important to say."

No, I was meaning your posts make me question my belief about whatever is being discussed. Thus "purified concpet." Sometimes I agree, other times I don't, however, I am forced to find the "why."
I want Proper process. I could give a rat's arse about right conclusions. I can duplicate conclusions or results if I have the proper process.
So, yes, lol, gimme the benefit of the doubt.
I don't post here much because I don't have much that can be added. I do get stuck on an issue or have a button pushed every now and then, though . |
