I signed up with SBI 2 weeks ago. Still going through Action Guide and doing prelimenary work with SBI-Manager. By sheere accident a few days ago I found that the domain I would like to have is expring on May 22, 2004. Today is 23rd. I tried to see availability through a couple of registrars, but it still says that domain is unavailable and whois.com still lists expiration date of 5/22/04. Anybody knows how much time it actually takes for the domain to become available after expiration date.

I'm thinking there is a redemption period for the owner, 30 days. But I know it's taken much longer for some good domain names to become available again, if they ever do.

Lots of domain sites explain it...

http://www.domainguru.com/faq/418/33
http://registernames.com/domain-expiration.php

Best thing to do is keep an eye on the name you want. As long as nobody else Pays to snap it up. You have a good chance of getting it after approx. 45 days or so. Wink
As soon as its available here SBI it quickly!

Thanks to both of you, guys. Now I know I will have to register domain with different extension for the time being, as I cannot wait for 30-45 days, and may be later get the original .com extension I want, if I am lucky. By the way can I have a number of domains pointing at the same site with SBI ?

Vitali,

You can purchase domain names with 1and1 for less than 5.99USD a year and you get Free domain forwarding to any website. Wink

The only thing about domain forwarding without actually hosting the domain is that it doesn't get you into the search engines for that particular domain name.

Here is the page for more details...

Thanks, Phil, that's helpful. However my question is if I can have 2 or more equal domains assigned to the same site within SBI. I am not even sure that I explain it properly as I am not very tech-savvy yet. But here is an example. I few years ago I had my website and domain. At some point I merged with a partner who had a similar site theme. If remember correctly I was able to assign my domain to my partner's hosting and we kept my previously hard earned listings from SE's. Does it make sense? If yes, is the same possible with SBI hosting?

Unfortunately, with SBI you can only have One domain Per SBI Subscription. You can with some other web hosting companies but not SBI.

I'm planning to put up another SBI-site in a year or so from now. The domain name I want is available, but so far I haven't registered it, because Ken Evoy in MYPC (page 198) says:

"Please... do NOT transfer an existing domain. It rarely seems to work out. It's not worth the hassle... YOUR hassle, that is. Everything is totally OUT OF OUR control."

And as far as I understand you cannot yet park domain names with SBI until you are ready to use them.

So, what do others do? Buy their domain names now and hope for the best?

Or wait keeping their fingers crossed that the domain names are still available when needed?

Thanks.

Vivi

The real truth to that is, it is Very important as to who you purchase your domain name from. Smile
As long as you have Complete Control and Ownership of that domain there is No Problem.

That being said SiteSell will still charge $50.00 CAD for administation charges etc. to transfer, re-set it to the SBI manager etc.

SiteSell actual uses http://www.domaindirect.com Wink
and there are 100's of others that are also fine again as long as you have Complete Control and Ownership of that domain.

Always keep in mind that there are tons of expired domain names that come available daily and many other ways to creatively name a site. Wink

And SBI has said the parking of domains is coming. Who knows. Smile

Just my thoughts

All the best
Phil

Hello Phil,

Thank you very much for your precise reply. Based on that I have decided to wait buying the domain name.

All the best,
Vivi

Thanks again Phil for your time and efforts. I've checked out the sites and bookmarked them for later use.

No, it's certainly not a niche I would get into either.

Best wishes,
Vivi

Vivi,

Just realized I needed to make a little correction regarding the $50.00CAD charge from SiteSell.

It is only charged if you actually Change your domain name.
The purchase of Each SBI subscription comes with a new domain name or a Transfer.

So, if you already have a domain name to transfer to a New SBI, There is No extra cost.

Sorry,

All the best
Phil

OK, Phil - no damage done.

I think I'll stick to my decision and not buy a domain name, before I'm ready to put up another SBI site.

I still have a whole lot of content, I want to add to my existing site, so it might be another year or so before I start a new site. Don't have the time to work on two sites at the same time.

Vivi
