Hi everyone
I am currently adding the finishing touches to a new site I've been working on, but last night I suddenly thought of something that concerns me a little bit...(I guess all my SEO research is starting to make me a little paranoid! )
I wrote a Perl script to cloak links to some of the pages and affiliate IDs in my site, so I am wondering if the search engines index these the "normal way", even with the special characters in the URL. In the directory the file is a static HTML page and the file name only contains underscores, so it's not a true dynamic page. Should I do a mod-rewrite, or is this not something I should be concerned about? I'm trying to optimize the site as much as possible, so I definitely don't want to jeopardize things by using scripting that affects a spider's path.
The script does not create gateway pages - it just cloaks the file name, and enables me to track the click-throughs on each link from a web-based user interface. Below is an example of what it looks like in the address bar:
mysite/mydirectory/file_name_XYZ.htm gets cloaked as mysite/cgi-bin/click/click.cgi?id=123

Hi Marlene,
It doesn't sound like you are doing anything wrong here, thus I don't think it can be defined as cloaking - at least as Google defines it.
Now I am not so technically savvy, so I am going to refer you to some savvy folks at another forum - there you will find someone who will answer your question in detail.
