Post subject: Key word optimization question
|
|
|
Hello,
Lets say I want to sell 'surf boards'.
Now suppose the keywords 'surf board' is in better demand than the words 'surf boards' (notice the plural). In other words both sets of keywords get the same number of searches, but 'surf board' has less websites on the internet than 'surf boards'.
But I want to opitmize for both sets of keywords to get more traffic.
Do I make one page optimized for both sets of keywords, or two pages. One set for the index page, and one set as a subdomain?
Like,
www.surfboards.com keyword: surf boards
www.surfboards.com/surf-board.html keyword: surf board
Or the other way around?
What are the advantages or disadvantages?
Thank you for your help |

Thank you for your response.
I just searched under surfboard and surfboards. They each come up with different search results.
What do you think the best route is? |

Yes, surf board and surf boards are considered to be completely different to the search engines.
You first will have to determine which keyword is the hardest to get into. This should be your front page optimized keyword. Alternatively, if you feel it is just too hard to get into, optimize for the easier keyword and just forget about the harder one (it is much better to rank 2nd for a keyword with 500 searches/month than 15th for a keyword with 2000 searches/month). Usually, I focus on one keyword per page. However, optimizing for multiple keywords on a page isn't bad (especially when they are so similar like this case). What you need to do is determine how much breathing room you have. If your competition is very tight, do not attempt to optimize both keywords on the front page as you will be taking away a bit from both keywords.
If you do decide that you can only optimize one keyword on the front page, then it would be very difficult to target the second keyword on the site. This is because it will look quite odd having a page in your site's navigation that is named just a plural/singular version of your frontpage. And yes, you must include this page as part of your site's navigation as just having a page optimized for keywords hanging out in limbo in your site doesn't work well at all with Google (unless you have virtually no competition for your keywords).
What I tend to do in your situation is make one domain for each version. This may or may not be feasible in your situation, but it is overall the best way to go about it in my opinion. |

I don't claim that the following is the best answer, but it has worked extremely well for us...
If the keyword isn't too terribly competitive, it is possible to optimize the main page for both the singular and plural versions.
Here's how Rupert did it: http://www.cheap-computers-guide.com/
Note how he used both singular and plural - cheap computers and cheap computer - in the Title, plural in the heading, both throughout the article, and both in links on the page.
The results: Today he's No.1 in Google for "cheap computers" and No.2 for "cheap computer". He's also No.3 for "cheap computer" - but that's an internal page. Great results! Not bad for a guy who was a newbie when I hired him.
Rupert used the "Analyze it" tool in Site Build It! to check his search engine optimization when building every page.
Here's an article in which Rupert describes how he did it:

Hope that helps. _________________ Allan Gardyne

One of my clients had that problem. He was ranking high
for his main keyword as singular but way down the rankings
for plural.
All I had him do was change the title meta tag on one of his
inside pages to reflect the keyword phrase pluralized, plus
add the plural on the page itself. This page already had content
that was conducive to the plural keyphrase, so not much had
to be done other than the above.
I had him then submit the page itself to Google (just to make sure).
In less than a week he was number one with the plural. But, keep
in mind he isn't in a super competitive category. Surfboards would
probably be much tougher.
Good luck to you!

Hi Hookani
That's just a plug for a product using an affiliate link. How about taking the time to contribute in a useful, meaningful way? _________________ Allan Gardyne

Got lazy with the post (gotta stop trying to post in the middle of the night). I'll be sure to make my post more useful based on the products I have used.

Hi,
I would suggest you that through Google Analytic you can find better keyword. Firstly find the global and local searches for your websites then choose perfect keyword. |
