Hi all,
I am considering SBI for a site I want to create... however, this site will be graphic/photo intensive and I was wondering if anyone is currently using SBI with a lot of graphics?
Would you recommend SBI for this?
Thanx

hi,
We use graphics quite a lot on www.everyday-taichi.com and I know that Scotch has a wildlife picture site.
The biggest problems are the limitations on the individual graphic file sizes.
Another problem is the way you to upoad the photos you have to put them into a graphic library and give them a description and a link name BUT you cannot view the actual image name.
If you use the SBI block building mode it can be boring, time consuming and generally unfriendly experience to build a graphic heavy page.
We have found a way to build a graphic heavy page in a single text bock using html coding but for that you need to know the image name ....which sbi does not tell you. So you need to keep good records.
Again because of the file limitations you cannot upload mpeg, mov or avi formats - not even small ones....
And the little niggle can be really aggravating the graphic names come out in a last used order rather than alphabetic - if you have a couple of hundred graphics it is really easy to 'lose' one.
And you can't udate a graphic - only the details you can see the link and the description. To replce graphics you need to delete and re-input.
Making getting it right first and everytime so very attractive.
Some or all of these problems may disappear when the next version is released.
Having said that our next site is going to have hundreds of graphics so it can be done. Just adopt good naming standards and stick to them.
So ... a qualified yes. But check out the limitation of the picture size in KB I think is about 50-70

Thanx for your reply Rosie... it was very helpful... I use Frontpage for all my web design and I do have some html experience... will Frontpage make it easier? I already have my graphics cataloged so I would rather not have to change the names with SBI... is there anyone else out there who could share some insight?
Thanx

Hi Linda
My site ? wildlife-pictures-online.com - is very graphic-oriented, as the name suggests.
Initially, loading the pictures was a nightmare, as each one had to be loaded individually to the graphic library and given a name ? incredibly slow and frustrating compared to using FTP.
There was also a file size limit of 30k, which was too small for decent rendering of an 800 x 600 pixel image ? only very low quality Jpegs qualified.
I approached SBI support about this and they increased the limit to 100k, which is certainly adequate for my ?big? pictures ? most can now be ?saved for web? in Photoshop at medium quality.
Since SBI introduced full HTML compatibility, loading of images is much quicker, but still a pain as each image on the page needs to be individually loaded ? no batch loading facility that I?m aware of.
It is also time-consuming when loading pictures - as Rosie points out - to locate the relevant image from the ?image-files? folder, particularly if each one is in thumbnail and large versions. I now keep only my logo, and a few other graphics that appear on all pages, in that folder. Then when I load a new page for the first time, I transfer the relevant pictures to the images folder so they?re easy to find. Once the page is loaded, I move them to a ?holding? folder.
One problem I had, when loading HTML pages, was using file names with a mixture of upper and lower case. This seems to have been sorted out, but I would suggest sticking to all-lower case for the file names to avoid possible complications.
Depending on your page lay-out, the SBI template can be limiting as there?s lots of wasted real estate down the left ?nav? margin, leaving very little space for images and text ? and you?ll need text for your keywords. You can start the page by adding three or four paragraphs of content, but then your images are likely to appear ?below the fold? and out of sight.
To get sufficient content on my pages so that I?d be accepted by Google AdSense, I basically redesigned the site and eliminated the left margin so that I could display images and content. Not sure tho? how usable this design is as haven?t done any usability testing.
So, bottom line is that SBI is not optimised for image-heavy pages, but in my opinion the time and hassle in loading images is worth it because of the many other advantages.
Hope this will be of help, but feel free to email me if you need any other info.

Hello Scotch
Your website is excellent. I really like it. But a question if I may? How did you manage to eliminate the margin on the left hand side of your SBI site?
I've been trying without success for awhile now and I just can't seem to get it right. My site has tables on it but aligning the table left just doesn't do the trick.

to eliminate the left column, you need to design your pages in html and upload them.

One difference between photography and other forms of graphs is that a photographer. Special software to enhance, edit, manipulate, organize, share, print, and use of your digital photos in creative ways. The magazine is also available in print worldwide, but the photography website is property of the European editions, Aisan and the U.S.. _________________ family photography |
