I just want to make sure I understand something.

PPC search engines will list your site based on your bid and not your meta tags correct? Obvisously, you bid on keywords that match your site topic.

Google Alta Vista etc, return results based on meta tags, keyword saturation etc.

With regards to getting your site ready for both types of search engines, you have to be able to do 2 things to win the search engine war.

Bid well on multiple keywords at PPC SEs and put lots of thought, effort and creativity into tweaking your site for Alta Vista and google.

Am I correct?

Thanks in advance,

Scott

Basically yes. The PPC engines fills up their search results with free listings ranked by "standard" search engine algorithms, but you won't get a place anywhere near the first page unless you pay.

Try to figure out what web surfers might search for when they're looking for a product like yours. The answer may not always be the most obvious one. Also, consider common typos! But never bid on keywords irrelevant to your site. That's just a waste of money.

Keyword saturation and meta tags does count, but perhaps not as much as people tend to believe. At least Google's ranking algorithms are much smarter than that.

It's way too much to go into details here, and much is guesswork anyway, but a few important points are:

Remember to at least include the keyword(s) Wink
Create a good and relevant site
Link to as many other relevant/related sites as possible
Get links from as many relevant/related sites as possible
Be patient while your Google PR points increase

Interesting question here: How many people actually use the old search engines these days?
