I wonder if there may be a jump to think they are chasing the $$$ - perhaps we need to back up. Is it possible that some of these people shared with others and saw the benefits - then decided to put it down on paper?

They started just in the same place as you. This forum is all about sharing. Do any of us think it doesn't cost Allan any $$$.

From my own experience I've had people ask me questions and I've tried to help. I also have been asked by local friends if I could show them what to do or how to do it?

I have one person on this board that ask me for some info recently and I told them after a couple emails that when they got to a point they "understand" they need to share with others.

I've published 5 eBooks on different subjects. Have I made any profit - YES. But I also wrote them because I was spending lots of time replying to emails.

I wrote my Content eBook as a manual for myself - and I follow it.

I'm a long way from being in any league with the above mentioned in this thread - but I started helping others and sharing long before I made my first $$$.

The added bonus of selling an ebook makes it so I can continue to share as I learn more. I believe we should share - but I'll be honest. You have to do the work. You have to have some failures - some ah-ha moments, some that was all wrong moments, some it was great to meet a friend moments (Debs) and some great share with others successful moments.

Since we are on the eBook subject. As you move forward in this business the "amount" of new things you will learn - gets more granular. What I mean by that is that I purchase eBooks from others each month - part of my education. They run the range of $20-100. If I find one concept or idea it's worth it - it may be a page, chapter or paragraph. That's $20-100 of experimenting I don't need to do or time I've saved. I'm paying for some else's knowledge and experience.

Finally, I don't know about Rosalind but from what I've read of Ken Evoy & James Martell - they are simply sharing what they have learned. I for one am thrilled they have taken the time to share their trials, success and failures.

As you read what these people and others on this board share - stop - think out of the box. How many people just started to copy - Rupert's site. I don't mind a little competition but I'd rather have ZERO.

Thank You Allan, Ken and James for sharing.

Gary,

Excellent post. Smile
Totally agree with you.
As I said in my earlier post... it's not all about money.
Sharing really builds on many things.
Many don't even need more money because of their sharing. Wink

All the best
Phil

I just read through the post again quickly and need to ask this question?

What is a list? Idea

- is it a mailing list
- being listed at the top of the SE for your niche
- having a group of people that follow you
- maybe it's posting to the forum with a sig

Maybe the list isn't defined the same for everyone. But I do agree - it's in the list Very Happy

Gary,

I'd add one more thing to your "list of lists" ... a list of mentors who have shared their knowledge, hard won wisdom, failures, and successes, some who shared more some less, some you pay to share some help you for free..... Whether one is in affiliate marketing or even for those who never use a computer, so often what someone shares with you has applications in other parts of life, too.

A mentor, a list of mentors are invaluable. . . . well, as they say it's all in the list! Smile

And Gary, thank you, for sharing. As I have said many times over many years to people I met in my travels all around the world: I may not be able to return the favor, but I will watch for when I have the chance to pass it on to someone else. You not only have wise advice but you so often are very motivational, in the best way. When is your next seminar? Razz Laughing

Mark

Yes, well said.

They sell success, and the dream of success, two different products, for two different audiences, in one package.

A small number of people will mine the hard info contained in these works and leverage it towards their own success.

A much larger number of people aren't really buying success, they are buying the dream of success. This is where the real money is, and the really successful netbiz publishers know how to serve this audience.

Rosiland Gardener does not "make $400,000+ selling other people's products". That's her gross. She makes about half that, still an impressive income.

I was baffled at first as to why she would use the inflated figure when it has the potential to damage her credibility and make me doubt everything else I read in her excellent book.

But I get it now. The extra $200 grand in the headline is there to serve those who will her book for the rush, not the hard info.
Read the marketing copy for almost any of these books, it's not about business.

I think what confuses the situation is that two different customer groups are being served by the same product.

Yes, the other Phil is right, there is big money in big dreams.

There's very useful money in small dreams, too. Wink

Many people can't imagine themselves earning $400,000 or even $100,000.

Facing competition from the people selling big dreams, I had serious doubts when I first published Rupert's case study, in which he describes how one of his SBI sites earns a mere $1,000 or so a month.

However, I've been very pleasantly surprised by the response. The case study obviously has a strong appeal to people who see $1,000 a month as an achievable goal.

When you're selling dreams, don't be afraid to think small.

Why do folks write ebooks? Or real world books, or magazine articles, or website content for that matter? To make some dosh, almost certainly, but as others have pointed out, that may not be the only reason.

Sean Burns.... browse any relevant forum and you will find posts by Sean, hundreds of them, invariably in reply to a SEO question. Sean always gives a straight up answer usually straight from Rankings Revealed, this must have sold hundreds of copies for him, I will put my hand up to the fact that his informative answers played a major part in my own decision to buy. But...

...would he devote what must be considerable time in visiting dozens of forums, if his ONLY motivation was to hawk his product? Personally I doubt it, he must have both a love of the subject for itself and a desire to help. After all, I believe that he has many huge sites to maintain and therefore a full schedule, there must be several methods of promotion less time consuming.... but, maybe to Sean less satisfying than helping others in forums.

All the best,
Larry Chamberlain.

one area to touch on is the fact that selling a how to book is
just one outher source of revenu for someone who is
already at the top of his or her game, and any competition
this would create could just be regarded as moor of a push to
prove ones superiority in the game ------people at the top
rarely have fear of competition but the lure of easy money
is too tempting for most to resist
