Post subject: Encouragement for those on the first rungs of the ladder...!

Okay. I have to post something here, because none of my friends understand what I do!
I crossed a major milestone in affiliate earnings today. Oddly enough it already doesn't seem that major, because I'm comparing it to the next hurdle I have to somehow get over, but if someone had mentioned it to me even three months ago... it would have seemed like an impossible goal.
Here's the deal: I've just made into four figures (US$) for this month's earnings. There's quite a range of people here, so no doubt some of you will be saying: "Well done, but you've got a long way to go" and others will be saying: "How did you manage it? It's impossible. I'll never do it."
For the latter group, I have some good news for you: if you stay committed to what you are doing and make sure you keep reading and learning and trying things out and learning... you will do it. There's nothing to stop you.
This is my record to date:
April 1997: Started writing website.
January 2001: Earned first couple of cents in a month.
November 2002: Made more than $1 in a month.
May 2003: First month with earnings in double figures.
August 2003: First month with earnings in triple figures.
March 2004: First month with earnings in quadruple figures.
You can see that the first two periods are the longest: 45 months from writing my first <html> tag to earning 2 cents in one month... (if this seems like an inordinately long time, bear in mind that I didn't have a computer for most of this time...) and 23 months from earning those first 2 cents to making more than $1 in a month.
But after that it gets much easier. Three months from double figures to triple figures and only another seven months from there to triple figures. That's less than a year from just over $10 to over $1000.
So for those of you especially, who are waiting and wondering when it's ever going to take off, take heart in the fact that if you keep learning and applying what you learn, it will take off and when it does the inertia will reduce the length of the intervals between each new milestone.
If I can come back to this forum in 12 months or so to report that I am earning five figures a month, I will be very happy. That's my next milestone to work towards.
P.S. I didn't start using pay-per-performance until November 2003 since I was very wary of the concept. Thanks to Debs and especially to Charlie for showing me how to reconceptualise these sorts of affiliate programs. |

I'll bet a penny to a pound that you're back this side of 6 months

Just the one site. Although I'm not sure the site I'm working on now could be accurately described as the same site as the one I started in 1997. That would be like saying: "This is William of Normandy's sword. The handle has been replaced twelve times and the blade seven times."

I have to confess I don't know anything about SBI.
I keep meaning to read through Ken Evoy's affiliate marketing course to pick up tips and strategies I'm not yet employing, but I really ought to print it out from the PDF first instead of trying to read it on the monitor. |

This is funny stuff!
Warburton, I wouldn't mind knowing how many unique visitors you're getting per day, and how large your site is.
Thanks,
Yaron |

way-hey to go there Warburton!!!
well done - an awful lot of people would have given up long ago, so you can be very proud of your achievement. Because of your committment I am sure you WILL do your five-figure-a-month goal, no matter how long it will take you.
wishing you every success

Congratulations! Let's hope you're pleasantly surprised how quickly your five-figure goal is achieved!
That's a big step, though. You'll have more fun if you reward yourself each step of the way, with little celebrations when you hit $2,000, $3,000, $4,000 etc. _________________ Allan Gardyne

Yes, you're right and surely I will, but I find it motivating to set each new major target on a logarithmic rather than a linear scale.
Yaron> Unique visitors are currently at just over a thousand a day. About 12-14% are repeat visitors. Most visitors only visit three pages - something I'm working on improving. The site has about three hundred pages but some of these are very old and neglected - the core of the site, that is the pages which are most frequently read and updated, consists of about fifty pages. |

Warburton,
Congratulations. It is encouraging when someone shares progress, finding a way to do it in a way that doesn't give more confidential info than they can/should/want to.

YOu must be careful with that sword you know! NOt only could you cut yourself, but you don't want to represent that it is the "original" lest the Honesty Cops come after you!
Seriously though, with 300 pages on the site, how do you manage to keep track of it all without going into a tizzy ... or just giving up on being able to? Keeping up with one's pages seems vital to having good content, but runs against having a lot of pages.
Mark
PS the system logged me out three times while reading three threads and trying to make this one post. So here's hoping It will let me post as logged in. |

What!? Grrr Just before hitting submit on the above "Guest" message I checked TWICE that I was logged in... It said "You have no new messages" and the other button "Log out mdr02125" This is very frustrating especailly given that sometimes people are castigated for posting when not logged in...
This has repeatedly happened on this forum (and only this forum) over the last few months to me. I am running Windows XP with IE 6.0.2800 on a new computer, so it's not old equipment. I know this is off-topic, but if anyone has wisdom to offer, let me know.

Hi Mark,
I've got the same system as you. Prevously had the same frustrating log-in problems. There's a few posts with possible solutions but I finally solved it by never logging out.
I keep http://www.associateprograms.com/discus/
on my desktop and it remains logged on 24/7
All the best

Hey Warburton, congrats your success, and trust me when I say that the jump from 4 to 5 digits per month is better than drugs.
I'm still dreaming of the next jump to 6 digits, but I imagine extremely few ever make it there. _________________ JP Sauve
