Post subject: Looking for the next leap forward in traffic....
|
|
|
Using Alexa ratings as a yardstick (and I'm sure there are some
issues with that, but just bear with me.), my site is 156,000.
I'm looking to get it to 80,000 over the next 3 or 4 months.
Over the last few weeks, I've:
Gotten the site listed in DMOZ
Set up a first set of good quality links and requested reciprocal links.
Submitted my existing reciprocal links back to Google.
Embarked on a joint venture with the moderators of
an important forum in my market, adding my unique products
to their 'industry' search engine.
I also bought some traffic (but I won't be doing that again
anytime soon.)
Over the next week or so, I'll be sending some articles out
to other news sites.
I know that these things will take time to 'bear fruit', but
I'm on a roll and want to do what I can...
So, what have I ignored, what other opportunities
should I be working on...?
Advice gratefully accepted,
Thanks in advance,
Scott |

Hi Scott!
Not to burst bubble, but the Alexa rankings aren't the most reliable source for checking your ranking across the Internet.
They base their rankings on the number of visitors that have their toolbar. I would say Alexa is a good resource when you get in the 75,000 and below range though.
Another traffic builder I have been using lately, and I found out about it here, is submitting in Newsgroups. I have seen that if a post a couple of threads I can easily get 75 people my website. Very cool!
Also, I would subscribe to www.trafficology.com newsletter for some great traffic building tips!
Another way to build your link popularity and link analysis would be to go to Google's Directory and find your catagory and then try to get reciprocal links back from the listings on those pages. Google has given them great PR (Pagerank) and receiving a link back from them will greatly help your website's value and pagerank in Google and rankings other major search engines.
I hope that helps a little! |

It seems to me that many on here are always looking for "free" traffic. That's good, and any way to bring your costs associated with running your website down is good too.
But, for most folks, you can get more targeted traffic with the right adtertising purchase, in one week, than you will in one year without.
What I personally suggest you use for advertising your website, is what has done well for me. Obviously, it may or may not do well for you depending on how you implement it, and your site theme/design.
1. Co registration - Buy co registration (never pay over .025 each!) and setup an email autoresponder with messages linking to your website.
2. Google Adwords and Overture
3. Opt in email campaigns
Those are what I use to generate new members to my website...works very well. |

Sounds as though you've made a great start - although I reckon you should judge your traffic by real traffic stats, not Alexa, which is just a rough guide.
Are there good email discussion lists in your industry that you could join and participate in their discussions?
For example, in the general Internet marketing/web site building etc field, LED Digest - http://list.audettemedia.com/archives/led.html - had about 70,000 subscribers last time I looked.
A good, lively post to it can boost your credibility and raise your profile.
Are there forums or message boards in your industry to which you can make posts, promoting your site in your signature?
Consider joining this forum and adding your signature here, too! _________________ Allan Gardyne

Trafficology was good in the old days, but now that it has changed owners the quality is deteriorating and full of advertising and marketing hype. _________________ Explore The Most Up to Date Site About How to Succeed with Adwords! |

Thanks, it does.
I know Alexa is an approximation of sorts, but I like it as a vector. It tells me direction and amount, if you will, and provides a basis for comparing my site against competitors.
I'll look into Trafficology as well (there must be something in the air, its the third recommendation I've received for them so far this week.)
The Google Directory will take some work. Most of the entries in my exact category are quite bitter competitors. Circling out from there and to related categories, though might work better. |

I'll have to do a little research on email lists in the field. There are a couple of key online fora, and one important Usenet group. I post there regularly, and have a good reputation and recognition as the 'go to' person in that area.
As a matter of fact, one of them is a forum that just included my products on their price-search engine. As I'd mentioned in my original post, there are no competing vendors for those products in their system, so I'll 'show' well there.
Overture's new site match offering was tempting, but the pay-per-click aspect makes it very expensive advertising. Were I to triple my conversion rate, I'd feel more comfortable. If they still offered the original pay-for-inclusion, I'd use it.
Ad-Words has possibilities. Can anyone offer some pointers on participating in it? |

Does it really? About a year ago I had serious problems with my main site. The server was getting old and geriatric and had trouble staying online and keeping the speed up. Lost lots of visitors that way before I finally gave up and moved to another server. It took a while for my visitors to come back though.
During that period with little or no visitors, my Alexa ranking soared. It has never been higher before or after the incident.
So for my site at least: the less visitors I get, the higher my Alexa ranking is. _________________ Frank Nordberg

Exactly. I used to love that newsletter.
They still put some good tips in every so often. But it seems all the new owners like to do is show you their vacation pics, and try and sell you the next "miracle" in advertising. I get an email from them selling something, every single week. Geez, it makes me wanna puke. |

trafficology definetely lost quite a lot of quality after the change of ownership.
The new owners seem to spend more time talking about how much money they make, than delivering quality content.
Luckily a managed to buy Trafficology Archives ebook, which contains over 200 traffictips. I don't know if it's still available, I didn't find any reference to it in the homepage anymore.
