Post subject: Adsense shows competitors, Amazon makes me no $. Now what?

Hi all,
I'm hoping for some advice from the pros - what everyone else is doing doesn't seem to be working for me. My website is a discussion forum for MBA students at my university. I started out with Adsense ads on my website, but it seems like the whole pool of ads was all competing MBA schools - I tried filtering them out to get to more generic "get help on your admissions" types of ads, but I used up all of my filters and the competitors just kept coming.
I ended up removing the Google ads and replacing them with single-item Amazon ads that I hand-picked as interesting to MBA students, plus put a dynamically-pulled general one from Amazon below it. I've made $0.04 from these links in the last 2 months.
Now, granted, a new semester's starting in a couple of weeks, and when I put specific textbooks up I'm hoping to see some revenue - but I really don't feel like I'm getting the bang for the buck that I should out of affiliate programs so far. Would you mind taking a look at my site here and providing advice for what you think would be a good affiliate strategy for me? Thanks!

Chris,
I would suggest adding some content to your links. The links themselves don't motivate the person to click. Maybe if it's something like, Need a good book for your finance report?
You may even consider changing those links to a page that contains a presale paragraph or 2 about the book saying why you choose it, then linking to Amazon from that page. You have to show them the benefit of buying that book.
Hope that helps!

Chris,
Scott is right. You've placed a whole column of amazon links on your right, but they don't entice me to click on them. You can place a short description of the books you selling and try to sell to them the benefits of buying them. Better still, create a section devoted to reviewing MBA books - the cheapest, most helpful, etc - and write articles reviewing the books, and weave your links into your content.
Hope that helps,
