Hi all!
I really don't like having to give my ss#/tax id# online to the affiliate programs. Is there really any fear in doing this online? With so many hackers, I still don't trust the internet. Are there alternatives?
Thanks,
Sue |

Yes, Sue, you can contact them via email or phone, and ask them to allow you to either mail in or fax a W-9.
You can get a copy of the W-9 from the IRS website at irs.gov
If they have a secure server you enter it on, and the lock is locked (lower right browser bar) and https:// instead of http:// shows in the browser address, it is secure. This is how credit cards are used online and it is safe with new browsers and increased security now.
The problems with hackers comes in within their own systems if they are not secure. They will place your info in their database, and if you aren't comfortable with that, you are out of luck.
You may want to apply for a Federal ID number, set up a d/b/a and go that route. Then you social security number isn't used, but the Fed ID is.

Setting up a corp can be expensive, depending on where you live and where you decide to file. Also some states require tax filings, if you are a Corporation, and fees, even if you lose money or don't make anything!
Getting a Fed Tax ID doesn't cost anything, and you don't need to be a Corp to use one, any individual or business can get one.
I would recommend, however, that if you start to make a decent amount of money, you would want to create a Corporation of some type if you live in the US, since it segregates the business from your personal assets for liability purposes. (Not legal advice, consult your attorney for that!)

Thanks again for the information, but where do I get the Fed ID #? From the IRS/gov site too?

Thanks Debs, you're the best! And Jim, I'm gonna think positive and KNOW I'm gonna go over the $600 mark.
Thanks again and again. This forum is really great. For a person who is a little fearful about starting online businesses, I feel so much more confident knowing you all are here!
