Post subject: [TS] - Blogging - can it be successful?

| from another thread, Mark wrote: | My understanding is that having a blog on a site can improve its ranking with search engines because the site is updated more frequently with (hopefully) quality content. In addition, a blog attracts visitors back to the site; an RSS feed improves the liklihood of such return visits.
At least this is what I've read--it's not based on extensive experience.
What do you recommend? What are the advantages to hosting a blog elsewhere and simply linking to it from one's web site?
I appreciate your insights and suggestions.

I think that using SBI as a blog could be a waste of the potential of SBI. I could be wrong, but SBI is more geared towards affiliate programs. Blogging can be a harder way of doing that.
I am not saying it can't be done... just that it might be harder. I know of a couple of very popular blogs out there, but they have a lot of work into them.
Furthermore, SBI doesn't allow you to install your own blog software, which I would recommend if you are going to blog on a regular basis.
And the SE's sometimes rank blogs differently, due to the different nature of the blogs. Yes, they are updated frequently, but often times the content is pointless drivel. So you have to work just as hard to make blog content as you do regular content. So why not just do a regular affiliate site? _________________ Eric D. Burdo

Eric,
Good points you make. I think I phrased my question wrong. I started with the idea (from various ClickZ articles) of providing an RSS feed as an alternative to an emailed ezine.
Then I thought about combining a blog, an ezine, and RSS feeds--all the same content, just 3 different ways to access it:
1) On the web site by reading the blog.
2) In the ezine, emailed to subscribers (but probably 50% won't recieve it because the name of my ezine itself triggers the spam filters: "Best Mlm Opportunities")
3) Via an RSS feed: More and more potential subscribers don't want to receive another series of emails but they will subscribe if your ezine is delivered via an RSS feed.
Thank you for your helpful feedback,

I've recently started a blog on my site (you can find it on the navbar of my site via the WWW button at the bottom of this post). It's just a regular SBI page, and it's quickly become the most popular page on my site, bringing a lot of repeat visitors. Often people travel on to other pages of my site from my blog, since I link to other pages sometimes in my blog entries.
I'd love to do whatever it is one does to get one's blog bringing in lots of external links and traffic from those links - how would I go about that with an SBI-based blog?
Thanks in advance! _________________ www.home-jewelry-business-success-tips.com |

Jewel,
Ivisited your blog last week - A smart move you have done. Now, an idea for you: Start the blog by urging your readers to link to your blog page, in order to share the blog with a wider audience: You could be the most linked-to site in your industry...
I run a blog outside my site - I gives me great linking and visits with each entry - and between, and it's the kind of people I want to have as visitors.

Thank you, Jewel for sharing your positive experience with blogging. I am encouraged!
As I put in the Subject of this post: Your web site boasts one of the most aesthetically pleasing designs of an SBI--or any kind of--site I've seen. Very nicely done. Great content too!
Have you considered an RSS feed for your blog?
On a completely different subject, have you tried the social networking site, Ryze.com? I bet there are some great contacts for your business there. I've only belonged for a couple of weeks but I've already met some great people, got some good referrals, and found products, services, and expertise from people I've grown to trust.
Best Regards,

See... proves me wrong.
Reading through these posts, I think a blog to go along with your content site would work (it obviously is for some of you). Just remember to get quality content in your blog.
As to the RSS feed... until SBI comes up with a RSS generating module, you would have to either:
a) blog outside of SBI and copy your content into SBI.
b) Blog in SBI and then get some program to externally process and syndicate your content.
I am not sure which would be better/easier. Probably b.
And remember, don't use JavaScript to include the RSS on your SBI site if you want it indexed. SE's don't spider the results of JavaScript. _________________ Eric D. Burdo

Are you saying that if javascript is used you won't get indexed or just that part of the page will be ignored? _________________ How to sleep well every night |

Just the code in the javescript isn't indexed, the rest of the page would be, providing no js errors exist, or something else keeps it from being indexed.

Once you have a site with a decent PR, you can use it to help build PR quickly on any other sites you create by linking to your new site(s). That's how it helps.

Hi, Liz, I think Guest means that you can mention and link to your new site from your PR5 blog to give your new site a good boost. I've visited both of your blogs and they're very professional - clean and informative.
Thank you for suggesting RSS, Edburdo and Mark; I'm in the beginning stages of trying to wrap my brain around RSS. I don't fully understand how to use it yet, and it seems it may be tricky to incorporate with SBI? I think we had an earlier post on SBI and RSS, and nothing conclusive was mentioned about how to use them together. Please correct me if I'm missing something!
Otherwise, blogging on my SBI site as I'm doing and then copying and pasting it into an external blog might be a workaround as mentioned - although one of the versions would be "duplicate content".
Thank you, Mark, for your comments on my site! And I will look into Ryze.com today - thanks for suggesting it.
Great suggestion, DbD, about requesting visitors to link to my blog. I'll work on the wording for that and add it to the top of my blog. Thank you! _________________ www.home-jewelry-business-success-tips.com |

Post subject: Using RSS with SBI
|
|
|
Jewel,
Here's what I wrote about using RSS with SBI in the previous thread (http://associateprograms.com/discus/viewtopic.php?t=3156):
But how to do it with SBI?
I've come up with 2 possibilities:
1) Use MailByRSS:
http://www.iupload.com/product/mailbyrss.asp
I write my blog entry and put it on my SBI site. I copy and paste the HTML into an email and send it to MailByRSS which creates a web page with RSS feeds.
Visitors to my site can subscribe to the RSS feed or they can receive updates of blog entries via email. My ezine/newsletter will simply be a collection of recent blog entries.
Advantages: No cost since MailByRSS is free
Disadvantages: I don't think MailByRss automatically submits entries to blogging directories. They also do not have a community of RSS channels which other users browse.
2) Use Radio Userland ("Radio" for short):
http://radio.userland.com/
Write my blog using Radio, which automatically syndicates it to blogging directories and to other users in the Radio community. Copy-and-paste the blog entries onto my SBI site. I want the blog entries on my SBI site also, as opposed to simply referring my web site visitors to the Radio blog URL, so that my blog page is submitted and tracked by SBI.
Advantages: Presumably more exposure because of the popularity of Radio and the automatic syndication.
Disadvantages: Costs USD$39.95 for one year of service (they do have a 30-day free trial), although this price seems very reasonable given the quality of the service.
I hope this helps!

My thoughts on the RSS. I would try and find a program that would syndicate your data externally.
HUH? Whats that mean?
Ok. Syndication is the process of taking your data, and converting it into a format that the RSS readers can use. Many BLOG packages offer this already. Since you cannot run any server-side scripting with SBI, you would need a program that would go "scrape" the content from your site, and convert it to a RSS feed.
You could find a company that does that for a fee. Or you could just get a cheap hosting package somewhere that allows server side scripting (such as PHP or Perl) and run it yourself. Just link your SBI site with this other site. _________________ Eric D. Burdo
